Bug, or my fault, or what?

Post by Sarin »

So...I was away for quite some time :) few months of silence, and then I come back with this...

Well. I recently installed 0.5 stable...started with low detail setting, since I didn't know how my ancient machine will handle it...after a while, I moved to medium detail...and since I didn't like the font, I changed it...and ever since, I keep getting "Segmentation fault" errors within minute or two of playing...happens when undocking or jumping between systems.

I'm running on Ubuntu 8.04...and including my vegastrike.config, I think it might be useful...

I can't find anything glaringly wrong Sarin the structure is ok have you tried reverting to the old font version and the next time you run it do so in a terminal with

Code: Select all

vegastrike 1>vsoutput 2>vserr
this will redirect the output to those two files they will be in your Home folder post them please as that will tell us where it is actually seg faulting.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Well...I got home from school, and tried putting back old config, then editing again, this time I changed font only at medium details (I previously changed font at other detail levels too). This time it works....

Seg faulting a few seconds after undocking, on Ubuntu 8.10. Repeated about six times, in a period of about fifteen minutes.

Welcome IG i see you are running in userland 8) the errors i see are all Python related which data set are you using the deb from the Ubuntu repos or did you get the archive from our download page if the repo version there may be a miss match as that data set is several years old and does not have the latest python code it's all in the data set. apart from that all i can think of is a corruption in the download. One of the devs may be by later with a more definitive answer.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Howdy :)

I used the RAR archive from http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/getfiles/. I generated an MD5 checksum for the archive that i downloaded, and it matched the one listed on http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/getfiles/, so ... i dunno. No seg faults so far today though :)

That exactly matches my problem, I got seg fault a few times too...but not often. I got it from same source (didn't check MD5 tho).

I got another problem tho, I did reinstall the game, and now I got no problems with frequent crashing...but I lost some equip few times, last time my Dostoevsky completely reverted into stock. It seems like the problem is related to Aeran planet, namely Stevie in Agea sector...been there to get adv torps. So far I haven't observed it anywhere else...

If either of you can reproduce it, could you run the game in gdb? GDB should not slow down the gameplay, but you MUST run the game in Windowed mode (run "vssetup", select 32-Bit Windowed). If you do not play in windowed mode, the entire X Server will crash when the debugger takes over.

To do this, type "gdb vegastrike"
At the (gdb) prompt type run

If the game crashes type backtrace full
Then, paste all the way from a few lines before "Program received signal SIG" to the end.

Will do, though I have had no further seg fault issues since November 22nd, and have played about 20hrs game-time since then.
