Here's what happened:
I got blown up when I was docking and docked with an escape pod. Then I saved, exited, and reloaded. When I reloaded the screen was all flakey, then it auto-docked me to the station I saved at and I found myself with a brand new ship!
FREE ship after mine was killed! :O

That is most likely a because you can not sell your beginning ship the Llama and check the MYFleet screen you should find an extra pilot that you can sell as a slave if you run low on cash
