Whenever a group of more than ~6 ships appears in view - even when they're so far away that they appear as single pixels - the game slows down significantly. I'm not sure what's going on here, but I'm getting the feeling that stuff is being rendered which the player doesn't actually see.
Any ideas what might be the cause of this? Is it buggy performance loss, or just my video card's shortcomings?
Solving group-related slowdowns?

A debugging tool that allows you to see which sections of code are executing at which time and how fast they really are usually good for finding bottlenecks and such there are several available.

Valgrind should be in your distro's repos not trivial to set up though none of the profilers is easy or intuitive to use that and knowing the code base kinda helps
