Game crashes after ship is shot down

I've experimented with attacking a mining base, and the following things happened:
-Station starts shooting back
-my ship is chewed up
-after they got through my shields and armor, the game crashes. I assume this was the point where a 'game over' should have appeared.

Game version 3.9.1 Windows, OS Win 98SE.

It's gibberish to me, but maybe the developers can use the info.

that's really too bad...i hope we've fixed this problem in 0.3.9 or in the up and coming release


does it happen every time...or just that once

did you have any missions going at the time?

what video card and driver settings are you using? win98 win2k?

I'm running win98SE with DirectX 9.0
My graphics card is a Matrox G400, driver version 4.0, maximum hardware acceleration selected in the system settings


I've repeated the experiment as follows:
-start a new game
-shoot at mining station
-wait until it destroys my ship

The result was essentially the same.
Only this time, VegaStrike managed to remove itself from the screen before crashing completely.
The "Saved Game selector" was still running, but not responding anymore.

The stderr.txt and stdout.txt looked quite similar to last time, here are the last few lines from each:

try clicking windows2000 as your OS/Driver optimization in the setup.exe setting

this helped on one other matrox card we tried...I think the same revision.

it makes the game go a lot slower--because it uses older driver paths--
but those older driver paths are what quake2 used--so they were adequately tested by the driver developers--hence that will make it go slower, but more reliably

it's a driver problem only--not one VS is responsible for

if that doens't work, disable sound
