your Wiki tutorial work fine Yes even for a no computer terms understanding guy like me and a french ( means not fluant english , but i progress. lol)

it' very clear and apropriate. and like i mention before if you never did it , i think i couldn't instal VS on ubuntu, i understand nothing about terminal or command line(and in general about computer) then i just copy paste your tutorial and i was happy to find it. Thanks!!

sorry for a late reply but is the first day of good wheater (Café, wine, smoke at the terrase looking for..etc) in my country then i m more outside than into my home.

Hello all, I'm not sure if I should just make a new thread, but since I am having a problem with installing from SVN on Ubuntu I'll post here. I followed all instructions on the SVN for Ubuntu wiki page and everything looked clear (no errors).

When I try to run the game I start off on some desert planet with only 2 buttons (computer and launch ship). From what I gathered from previous versions and the newb user tutorial this is not supposed to be the case. When I launch my ship, I have a very messed up hud, or rather no hud at all. None of the static graphics that are supposed to be there are there (the cockpit, two circles that have dots in them that move as you turn, even my speed) nor is my mouse cursor (I'm controlling this with the mouse). Also, my settings in vssetup are not being saved (resolution, mouse mode).

Before all this, I tried to install from the Ubuntu repos. That game worked, except I couldn't land on planets (or maybe I wasn't close enough) so I checked out the forums and ran into this thread and decided to install from SVN. I had the same problems as I listed above. I then tried to install from getdeb.com and that version won't even launch. I did "complete removals" in synaptic for both the Ubuntu repo and getdeb installations. I just finished doing the SVN tutorial for the 3rd time or so and nothing has changed. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you delete the hidden folder in your home directory try deleting it and running vssetup to create a new one then run the game from a terminal with

then post them here if you still have a problem and welcome aboard.did you put the symbolic links in from the binaries to the root of the data folder the one with the copy of vegastrike.config and NewGame that may be why it's not saving your choices in the config file BTW the one in the data folder should not be the active one(It does not change) but the one in .vegastrike will be.

Thanks for the reply. I deleted the .vegastrike directory, but nothing changed when I ran the game. The vegastrike.config was updated after I ran vssetup but the game doesn't seem to be looking there. I did create the symlinks in the data directory and I was running from them.

That tells me some thing have a look at the config file in .vegastrike scroll down to the section after the keyboard bindings

It is using the one in your home folder
CONFIGFILE - Found a config file in home directory, using : /home/max/.vegastrike/vegastrike.config
so have a look there with gedit set highlight XML syntax View-->Highlight Mode-->Markup-->XML
and add the default mission line if it doesn't exist which strange because i check out the svn tree myself just a few days ago and it's there so try a svn update after deleting the vegastrike.config copy in the data folder that should pull a fresh copy and there is a good Gnome gui for svn called RapidSVN or KDEsvn if that's your preferred desktop.

Thanks again for the reply. My ~/.vegastrike/vegastrike.config has the same stuff as yours.

I just deleted the vegastrike.config and the new game file in the data dir and now I have a game menu :D Before it used to dump me right on that planet with no menu. Thanks for your patience and your help. GG

unfortunatly, got the same problem Here ... Using ubuntu Jaunty

The game compiles fine but when i run it ... i got no menu and appears on a arid planet w/ no ship going into computer/loadsave/new game don't solve. The universe is not generated because i don't run from the menu ... sux :(

I tryed to remove the config file as well and checked it after running vssetup ... all seems fine as in your post. But it still do that bullshit

I deleted new_game file ... still the same bug Please help me i compiled this game fine on my old laptop but i want to try it on my high end comp !!!

Sorry for my english, i'm a dumb frenchman :)

after removing setup.config from data dir and updating from SVN i can run from the menu :)

Does this Ubuntu VS compiling and installing wiki how-to (if that's what it is) still exist?
I haven't been able to find it, either from the how-to's page or by googling.
(When I refer to some important online info, in a post, I try to link to it, to make things easier for future readers.)
I downloaded the vegastrike repo, and managed to compile after many tries; well, with some help... (BTW, my
friend was NOT impressed with the lack of package dependency info in the configure. Once configure gets through,
he said, there should be no missing dependencies, such as vorbis, coming up on make.)
Anyways, it compiled, finally.
Then I got the data repository.
What I cannot find in the wikis is what to do now. Do I copy/paste the generated binaries into the bin folder in
the data repo, or what?

First the wiki link to MC707's Ubuntu tutorial now for your question about setting up to actually play the game.

First do not run the game in your main svn checkout of the data tree as the first time you do all the Python scripts will get compiled leaving them as unversioned pollution the next time you go to update so create a separate folder in your /Home lets call it Playground for convenience so copy the data folder from your checkout folder to the Playground folder now expand it so you see the whole tree notice that there is no bin folder in the VS data tree so create one and yes copy/paste vegastrike,vssetup and vegaserver now before we leave that folder with the binaries still selected right-click one of the options is Make Links do so then cut/paste them to the root of the data tree where vegastrike.config and master_part_list.csv are now double click the vssetup link make you toggle your preferences that will create the .vegastrike folder with the active vegastike.config at /yourusername/.vegastrike that dot at the beginning with make it a hidden folder to see hidden folders just "ctrl h" there will be lots of them as that's where most apps store there configuration files and data as they are forbidden to write to the system area of your HD you might as well open the dot vegastrike folder now and bookmark it for quick access :wink: now to start the game just go back to the data folder and double click the link to vegastrike and if you want the log files is a bit different in that case we start the game in a terminal from within the bin folder with that string earlier in the thread

A bit of explanation here the ./ in front means run the binary in the folder not any other thing in your path that might be called veagstrike while the rest of the command pipes stderr 2 and stdout 1 to the named files.

Setting up PU is much the same only when you have finished the copy to your playground folder you will need to clean out all those windows .dlls as they are useless in this environment :wink: copy/paste the binaries make the links this time to /priv_pu run vssetup for pu and bookmark .pu (dot pu) and start it the same way as vegastrike now i hope this is a bit clearer than your morning coffee :mrgreen: have fun chuck

Alright; thanks! I won't do it now, tho; I'm doing the svn checkout of PU, and I don't want to risk crashing
the machine in the middle of a checkout. I'll report back, later today.

It works!!!!... kind of. No music. No sounds until I accidentally crashed trying to park, and then
the base defenses made a racket before they pulverized me.
Slow refresh rate; very choppy.
Mouse control WAY too sensitive; I just look at the mouse and the ship turns 180.

Could you run it in a terminal and post those files that it produces chuck you should know the routine by now ;) And the config file can be tweaked for that mouse sensitivity but lets get music and sound working.Oh and is the VS or PU i guess i find out from the logs then :lol:

I can't find stderr or stdout. They are not under /bin; they are not in the main folder; they are not in .vegastrike...

EDIT:
BTW, my sound setting is now at All Linux Sound; but I had it in All Sound before, and wasn't working either.

This is interesting as the lib mentioned is AL which is the sound lib now how did you start the game not with

in the bin folder as that would have left two files vserr and vsout they are the stderr(vserr) and stdout(vsout) in that folder ;) so please try that as to what they mean that i am unsure of :oops:

But t's not an error so now lets have a look at the other end Ubuntu's sound setup right-click the speaker on the top panel choose Preferences and try the different options available as the music stream may just go to a null device.

Just for an update; loki1950 was helping me in real-time chat. Verified my sound settings are
right, like PCM on, no muted channels.
I tried listening to ogg's outside of vs and they sound good; but in vs I get sound effects but
no music.
I tried All Linux Sounds, All Sounds and My Linux Sounds in vssetup; no change.
No resolution yet.

I was looking at the Ubuntu Installation wiki page, and found,

I think I only did ./configure. Could this be the problem?

It's a possibility for sure doing a new build is pretty easy if you do so in the same folder run "make clean" first or use cmake an other build system that we are moving to as it was designed to be cross-platform.

I don't understand the Ubuntu VS Installation Guide Wiki page; or maybe it's my linux-newbie-ness...

In the Compile section it tells to run the auto-sh or whatever script, then has a configure line with
enigmatic arguments, then make and make install.

But the next section is called Configuring, and has two new configure lines with new enigmatic
arguments, and more making, and more make-installing.

Does one really have to configure, then make, then make install, then configure again, then make
again, and make install again? It feels wrong.

You can't understand the Ubuntu guide? Maybe you can understand this one, then? That's the guide I used to create the Ubuntu one. THAT one has a lot of enigmatic arguments.

The guide is tested, double tested by me, and tested by my brother. In fact, I'm going to format my pc soon, and will install VS in kubuntu
