Vegastrike.exe and Audigy conflict

At least one other PU player and myself have this problem. We both have Dell pc's, both run XP SP2, and both have Audigy sound cards.

The problem: When we quit the game, the music continues for up to 60 seconds before it stops and vegastrike.exe does not exit at all. The only way to end vegastrike.exe is via Task Mgr. Updating the sound drivers doesn't appear to help.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 3 which I bought in Oct '04. Stats are P4 3.4 gig, 2 gigs RAM, GF6800GTO, SB Audigy 2, XP SP2. Device mgr. shows a "Creative Audigy Audio Processor WDM" The entry for the other guy having the problem shows exactly the same thing.

If we switch off music and sound, there is no problem exiting.

ADDENDUM: The bug was introduced by Rev. 11915, which modified vegastrike.exe. This was later passed to PU as Rev. 212.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to help narrow it down at all.
That only means that it happened before 11915.

Can you find the date of vegastrike.exe one commit before 212 (the date of the executable that works). Feb. 27 is an upper bound on the date, but it would help to have another date so I can narrow down source code changes.

Does this repository have a viewvc URL?

I first had the problem exiting PU at approximately 5:00 am GMT on 28 Feb. Before that the game exited normally. Prior to playing PU at 4:40 am on 28 Feb, I updated via SVN and got the most recent revision. It was when I tried to exit that game after that revision that I first had the problem.

It was suggested that I should install Vegastrike and see if I had the same problem, so I did via SVN on 28 Feb and found that I had the same problem when I exited Vegastrike. I also have Vegastrike v. 0.43 on my system and it exits normally.

I was told a change in vegastrike.exe was causing the problem and that they'd reported it to you guys for a fix.

I've gone throught the revision log back to 21 February, but could find no other mention of a change that involved a modification of vegastrike.exe. I can't go back any further than 21 Feb....either because of a limitation in the log, or because I might have installed the SVN version of PU 1.2 around this time. (I also have PR/PU v. 1 and GG on system and all exit normally.)

I don't know why the revisions skip numbes. I assume that's just something inherent to the SVN update system. This is essentially the whole content of my log from 28 to 21 Feb.

It was copied from the vegastrike repository chuck hasn't been able to get a win32 compile for about a year he says :wink:

As I mentioned above, I also have the same problem with Vegastrike, itself. After quitting the program, the music continues for up to 60 seconds before quitting and vegastrike.exe continues to run in the background indefinitely, still stopped manually by task mgr. If there was a sound effect running when I quit (say I quit from space while under attack and I'm hearing the enemy's guns sound effect), that sound effect will continue indefintely till I reboot the system (not sure how to get rid of it in task mgr). This is identical with the problem in PU which began, for me, on 28 Feb.

that would be amazing because the opcode collider has nothing to do with playing sound, nor does it exist anywhere where sound is being played, nor would it take anywhere near 60 seconds to do anything in opcode, so we cant be waiting on it.

If exiting causes the game to wait for a song to finish playing, then the audio thread is in a loop that it's not polling for any message about quitting. Meaning we probably do a thread_join in the main game and because the music thread doesn't know to exit, it doesn't find out until it gets ready to play the next tune.

opcode calls are only made in unit_collide, the only other places it's used in is a couple places where the opcode object is returned, or passes as an argument and those are very few places.

To put it another way, the longest a call to opcode takes is during unit creation when we have to generate a tree, and that takes a tiny fraction of a second.

Edit: This is why i love how the win32 bins are updated. Nobody ever puts the revision they are building against in the comment.

I downloaded both files (naming each one "vegastrike.exe") and replaced my current vegastrike.exe with each in turn. Neither one makes any difference. I still have the same problem with both. I didn't even bother to load a save. All I did was let the game load to the first menu screen and then clicked "quit." Both the music and vegastrike.exe continued to run. The music cut out after maybe 30 seconds and vegastrike.exe just continued to run in the background till I killed it in task mgr. (I've let it run for as long as 15 minutes before, so I assume it'll just run indefinitely.)

Maybe I completely misunderstood what I was supposed to do with those files (I claim no technical expertise) or maybe something changed in my system on 28 Feb. Haven't a clue.

It's entirely possible that this has been broken for quite some time now and nobody plays with music with that card .


I think it would be ideal to get this run in a debugger and find out where the audio thread is stuck. that may shed some light on things. The audio thread will be getting a lot of work after 0.5 though i suppose fixing music and such for audigy in windows is a pre-0.5 bugfix.

I was playing the music with that card in PU without any problem quitting till 28 Feb. I can't say what the situation was with Vegastrike proper prior to that date because I didn't install .5x till 28 Feb when I started having the problem exiting PU. My assumption is that it, too, would have worked OK prior to 28 Feb, but, who knows, maybe not.

All other games (and I'm currently playing a couple of others) are running normally. Same goes for other programs. No other exiting problems at all.

If you'll give me some instructions on how to do that, I'll be happy to give it a go.

did you try updating the sb audiology driver

First try a windows update / downloading a new driver if possible... I don't want to change two variables at once

If that does not fix it, can you test a few revisions before 11906 and try those if it's not too much trouble?

The ones I gave you are 11906 and 11882, but perhaps the bug is in the revisions before that (you have to scroll down a bit), assuming you had been keeping up-to-date before first noticing the problem.

I failed to follow up on this here, but thought I'd better in case someone else has a similar problem. This all happened about a week ago now.

Yes, I did finally find the right Audigy update and installed it (had problems installing the first one I tried which is why I gave up on updatting). Yes, it solved both problems (sound and vs.exe continuing to run after quitting). I should have made more of an effort to update before starting this thread. Sorry to waste everyone's time with this. :oops:
