Which would you say is the best Medium/Heavy mounted gun, and laser..?

Medium? Probably razor if you can handle the disgusting power drain, disruptor beam otherwise.

For heavy, the reaper gun is the best combination of damage, speed, and range, but the price is ridiculous. Ktek beam does the same damage, has a shorter range (4 km), and is much less expensive (and doesn't have any bugs). Heavy ion beam does more damage than anything else, but it has a 2 km range and rapid beam attenuation - it's basically an anticapital weapon.

(Thanks to attenuation, it looks like a combination of cheap laser and disruptor beams is better than the expensive light ion beams, though from the performance of those Hammers you wouldn't guess so.)

The Aera milspec penetrator gun apparently fits on any mount due to a bug (in 0.4.3, or so I've heard), but it's supposed to be a heavy gun. I used one briefly, and basically it looks like having one (or two) won't do you much good. Four of them would probably be useful though.,

Well thankyou for sharing your weapon knowledge, I will come to remember this in the future if I see these in an Upgrade Shop. ;)

Right, I would have guessed...

(BTW, doesn't the reaper gun use special ammo in SVN?)

Some people like lancelots

http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forum ... php?t=7062

strange thing but I have to proof again  my lancelot.stock only take ONE reaper cannon, but it has 2 heavy mounts

BTW : sol/sol is a supermarket !

Edit : I now have 2 light and 2 heavy ion beams and it 'feels' a bit better than 2 razors and 2 neutrons. But I still think that guns feel cooler 8)

I've tried Lancelots, they're nice but I tend to get shot up in them - can't dodge gunfire as easily. I used to figure that the lurching motions were due to the combination of high turn speed and high inertia, but now I'm not so sure, since the Derivative (with lower angular acceleration) maneuvers better when using keyboard control. It looks to me like, with certain ships, keyboard control is just too clumsy to use - I'm thinking that should be treated as a bug.

Hmm. Looks like my simple damage calculations may not be all there is to weapon selections. I just tried out dual tachyon guns and found them to shred things faster than reapers, in spite of the supposedly much lower damage. And disruptor (bolt) guns seem to do more damage than they say. I'm starting to wonder if the damage for certain weapons is displayed wrong, or if there's something I'm not getting...

You are taking the different types on damage into consideration aren't you.

Different types? So far I only know about phase and special damage (which isn't really damage), and tachyon guns have neither. I suppose that my tachyon guns could have appeared to tear up that pirate Hyena faster if there was another ship firing on it, but the nearest ship was 6000 km away.

Has anyone got any ship and weapon recommendations for the latest SVN? In particular what would be a good step up from the Llama and what weapons are good in the mean time? I'm looking for increased combat ability.

@cap601 kinds problematic since most every weapon has been renamed for example mass drivers now come in three size if remember right and thee have to be rearmed with ammo every thousand shots or so.with that in mind start with a solid defensive base best armor and shield that you can afford then find the weapons that way you stay alive till you find what you like  after all visits with the Hag aren't fun

It's a splash screen you get when you die that features the Space Hag :) reminds me a bit of one of the old Chinese goddess.

Okay, an update... After starting a new game (and learning how to turn off the cockpit  ) I've gotten enough money to buy and outfit a stock progeny.

This thing is pretty nice. Can pack a halfway decent armament, lots of ammo, etc. and the acceleration is great. However... 4 emitter shields on a fighter that can only take an L1 reactor (and no capacitors) is almost a showstopper. The best shields it can take without losing shield regen speed are half the strength of a Dostoevsky's and regenerate at a third the rate. The low shield regen rate in particular is bad, making the Progeny very vulnerable to gradual pecking away by corvette's point defense weapons. If this thing could take an L2 reactor or 2-emitter shields it would be much better.

I tried an Admonisher once for hauling cargo... Thing flies like a pig. The lack of heavy weapon mounts doesn't help (although it could mount a lot of gauss cannons I suppose).

The Progeny's biggest problem, on the other hand, is that you're limited to parts which are too power-hungry for its puny reactor. Little ships like that really ought to use Shield2, not Shield4.
