Why do the uln not like me?

They don't appear to be much in the way of fighters, mostly cargo type ships is all I ever see. All I ever did was kill a couple pirates and an aera and my rep for them went down everyone else's went up.

the Uln appear to be allied to both factions so that's why killing Aera and pirates upset them

they are a nuisance you can hit "1" to covert them to friendly temporarily or just blast them

It's also said they've had certain activities with the Mysterious race known as "The ancients" which currently DO NOT appear in VS..

The Ancients are a legendary race nobody in the current VS time frame knows anything about them except for certain artifacts that just prove there existence at some point.

Do you have to target them then command your turrets with [P] to shoot them or is it automatic?

I've got an odd situation with the ULN and DGN... DGN's are ok with me, dgn_citizens hate my guts, same for uln_citizens, though the regular ULN hate me too... it's not my fault you manuver in between my ship and the pirate I'm roasting. You'd think those bright pink particle beams are invisible with how often that happens.

Yes, I have..

But on my Vegastrike game it doesn't ALWAYS display the Race or Faction, just some sort of Squadron or something on the same lines...

I am hated by the ULN, Forsaken and the Pirates. the Forsaken are teh ones coming after me on corvettes. With a big enough ship, the ULN and DGN avoid you like the plague, its those damned forsaken coming out of nowhere with those corvettes that are a pain. I got wasted in a Clydesdale by one that came out of nowhere and nailed me point blank before I could cloak with a torpedo.

They are like the pirates more or less as far as ships, just slightly confed aligned so you piss off everyone but the Aera when you shoot them... As for the Uln, Dgn, etc, easy kills if you can take down Llamas and Hyenas. One of them flies those annoying Dodos with heavy tractors, but they are manageable if you can get a light fighter in really close and stay behind them.

Annoying is right, they are not really capable of any serious damage but still. They are like the cockroaches of the Universe.
