No inertia?

Post by Adept »

I was really glad to see an updated version of the Origin's classic Wing Commander title Privateer. Apparently the game has been created using Vega Strike as a platform.

Unfortunately the game (so maybe Vega Strike as well?) has absolutely no inertia. The ships move like they were on rails, á la X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

This makes the game unplayable for me. It doesn't feel like the beloved space shooter of my youth. It's really annoying trying to hit a small peanut of a ship that is dodging "laser" bolts with ease.

Is this the paradigm of Vega Strike in general, or has the maker of the Privateer conversion just messed things up?

I recommend to all the space fans here that they take a look at how another classic is thriving. The Allegiance banner under this post will take you there.

Welcome Adept try flying one of the really big ships(hack your save file) there is inertia most of the smaller ships have unrealistic acceleration 20g so inertia is not that noticeable also just load up the Llama with cargo you will notice an immediate change in it's handling as you now have more mass there is an indicator on the HUD for Mass(% base mass).Have fun.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Good to see another Allegiance fan! :D
But yeah, that confuses me too, inertia should affect EVERYTHING.

Inertia isn't turned off for the Priv dataset (the VS engine will always have inertial effects) - however, the thrust to mass ratio in the Priv data sets has been set very high, so the effects of inertia are very difficult to see.

And that thrust/mass ratio matches the original game which after all the whole point of the mod

It does though at times you are sure that it is not so they seen to do 90 degree turns and other impossible manoeuvres that you can't  most of this behaviour is the AI codes fault so it is slated for a rework :D

Are you sure?

I liked the flying feel of Privater, but the Vega Strike version drives me crazy. I'm pretty sure the original had significant "slide" effects, and ships weren't able to zig-zag about like they do in X-Wing.

Can I adjust the values somehow to make the game more playable for myself?

Sure you can change them have a look at units.csv and master_parts_lists.csv use a spread sheet program or the tool in this thread http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forum ... php?t=7143 and look at the physics section of the config file may give you some ideas. if some variable or value in each file is confusing you ask about it. happy hacking 8) have you tried turning off the flight control computer with the "`" key that's what gives you constant velocity might be closer to what you want.

Enjoy the Choice :)
