Hi,

I just uploaded the parts I translated so far.
The German manual can be found as a subsection of the english one. Final style will probalby differ slightly from the english, but it's a long road to go anyway. So I wish happy translating - if anyone wants to participate. :)

P.S.: I think it's better ro open a new thread here in the Translation subforum... (maybe something like 'German online manua'l)

Had a quick look - good work.

Suggestion for consideration:

Until you have translated pages available on links, maybe just link back to the original english page. Then, just change the links as you work through the pages? That way, information is still available.

is there an possibility that the german keyboard id diffrent from the american one, i can't have any access to the turrets control, i looked up the position of the key's on an amerikan keyboard, when pressing this on an german one nothing happend


can someone give me a link to the german manual?

hi@all, new here =)
found VS some weeks ago, great game!
german translation? would be nice, yet i think the most important thing for "us germans" would be a table with the keyboard-layout translation! i've tried nerly all keys, yet didn't find all commands; especially the 'shelton slide' is pretty much impossible to type with german layout since it would be shift+altGr+\...

[edit]ah, just found a help page which told me that the keys are at the very same position, regardless of the keyb-layout, so shelton is ^ in german =)
maybe (if that damn godfather-game leaves me some time) i'll do the controls for the german keys in the wiki... hope that pontiac will forgive me using his images ;) [/edit]

Great! It would be nice if the templates could be referenced from that table or somewhere, it would make using the key templates more convenient. (This would help for the english keyboard as well.)

Aha... we ought to link to that from the US keyboard layout page (and to Keyboard layout#GERMAN currently available templates from the DE keyboard layout page.)

Hello

A big part, of what you can read in the game is happening at the bases, when you want to buy cargo,
upgrade your ship and so on, and most of this you can find in the file
/vegastrike/master_part_list.csv

And there are not too many entries, I don't mean lines, I mean entries there are only 422
entries, my editor counts 423, but the last one is empty,

I already translated entry 58 to the end,
so I can do the rest also alone

At this stage now there are two german files, one only with the translation,
the other one with the translation and the add_reactor-capacitance-hack,
which allows a lot of ships to be upgraded with add_reactor_capacitance.

But my next translation project is to translate, what the bartender tells, the missions
and the news, all python files, for this I like,
if someone helps me, it would be very nice
if I have to do it alone, I need time until october

I already translated entry 58-242,
mostly there are missing the cargo description entries, so so if anybody want to help me,
start with the translation of enty 402 and go up, I continue with 243 and go down

...

So if you want to help me download the file, make some translations and upload it again.
Or just rename the file into master_part_list.csv and remove your old
/vegastrike/masterpart_list_csv and use my file, you will be astonished, how much
german vegastrike can speak with this file.

Yes you can put this in SVN. And if you check this file with an administrator
please tell him, that this file is still in construction.
If I have to do it alone, I need around 10 days, and I have to do some
fine tuning of the text, until now I tried to translate word to word,
so I still have to make some little changes, that it sounds better in german.

And in this file is the add_reactor_capacitance-Hack,
which allows vessels to be upgraded with "add reactor capacitance".
Shall I remove it?

By the way, I removed the old file and added 50 more translations.

Help wanted, or do I have to translate the whole file alone,
it is on page 4.

Hello

Now something about the missing infrastukture to translate.
Some files have the ending csv, some xml, and some py

And here is a possible solution for the files with the py.ending (base/bartender.py and modules/news-dynamic_content.py).

I just had an adventure with base/bartender.py
I translated the whole part from the function,arrey, don't know what "tender"
with
http://babelfish.altavista.com/
so the translation is not so good, awfull, to tell the truth, but he speaks german,
I think the bartender is a foreigner and drunken.
Then I splitted the whole file, in the main part two new files, which had the english and the german version of the tender funtion,array?

To the main rest part, I added some parts to handle the different languages,
Then I decided to make a 4th file, who handles the differences of the languages,
and leave the rest of bartender.py in peace, languages.py is a better idea for future development

It was the first time, I wriote python-code, and I started loving this language immediatly.
Anyway it works, you just have to remove /bases/bartender.py
and add the following files, they have the ability to be added by several translations.
Soon I try to add the news-dynamic_content.py file

Please try it, you just have to remove the .txt ending and replace bartender.py with this four files
@Halleck, I hope I didn't used too funny english expressions this time
Here are the files, they work fine on my computer.

That's a clever way of handling the translations for python modules. I tested these in-game and they work well, although you might want to clean up the punctuation and capitalization. Also... is this all generated by babelfish, or did you translate any of this yourself?

We greatly prefer human translations, although if you want to use this as a starting point for a human translation I guess that's fine.

We'll need to generalize your python switch for all dialogue and python-based text. One variable should be all that needs to be changed in order to switch between german and english python files.

I'll see if dandandaman can have a look at it.

In the meantime, I tested your master parts list, and will be commiting it to SVN immediately.

EDIT:Commit finished. Your master_part_list.csv can now be found in /trunk/translations/deutsch/.

Works great... the spacing is vegastrike's fault.

Did you add to this, by the way? Your description here looks longer than the english one in SVN.

1.
The space grog description is longer, because in germany, we don't know
what is "rotgut", so I added a description of rotgut, I found in the internet,
I found it very easily with google, but I can't find this side again, I don't know why, normally I find everything again,I can google very well:

The translation into english is more or less:
"The name rotgut was given to a person in the 18.century, who collected dead boddies and conserved them in cheap whisky and then sold the boddies to universities,
and after that, he sold the whisky to the students.

This was not a serious try to translate it, it was just an idea.
this was just a try to show a possible way, to handle the language problem.
I'm a newbie in python, but I think, you understood my idea.

3.
I just translated bartender.py with babelfish,
but then after every black comma, I had to press the "enter-buttom",
to get the line numbers again.
And I had to run the "linux-programm?" "sed", which can replace letters,
I had to run it several times, first I had to replace "ä" with "ae", then "ö" with "oe",
"ü" with" ue" and "ß" with "ss".
This could be in languages with accents a bigger problem( the ä,ö,ü,ß are just empty (missing) letters).
Is there a way to change the encoding?,I think so, but where?

3.I saw you screenshot,
with my linux-version all the the text is in the box, like it should be,
and with my bartender.py hack, I also didn't saw problems, it looked like the
english version, only the language was different.

4.th masterpartlist.csv is translated by hand

so 5.th my problem the rotgut translation and the
Haggis and lutefisk translation,desciption from Rlaan_Luxury_Nutripack,Natural_Products/Rlaan_Food, from the Rlaan_Luxury_Nutripack,Natural_Products/Rlaan_Food I took directly from the Internet, I have to change the words a little bit in this 3 cases, that noone bothers us with Copyright, (We wrote it first and you republish it), perhaps it's just paranoia, but better it is.
I do it soon( the next thing I do).

6. the masterpartlist.csv file still has the add_recoctor_capacitance hack,
Loki1950 thinks, it is a cool hack, shall I remove it, if I don't remove it, the german version has more abilities than the english one, or add it to the english version.

Here again the Hack, which made me start the translation-action:
Find the file /vegastrike/master_part_list.csv
Find the line:
add_reactor_capacitance,upgrades/Capacitors/Reactors,40000,20,20,"@cargo/cargo_hud.png@Provides additional energy storage for main capacitor bank"

Change it to:
add_reactor_capacitance,upgrades/Capacitors/Reactors,40000,20,0,"@cargo/cargo_hud.png@Provides additional energy storage for main capacitor bank"

Just change the second 20 to 0, and a lot of ships can be upgraded with
several times add reactor capcitance, depends on their /units/.../...template file

I hope I forgot nothing

Thanks for your detailed response.

1. Defining jargon is fine if it will help clarify. You could also do something like change the expression "rotgut" into an equivalent german word for "cheap alcohol" or "bad beer".

3. We may be able to change the character encoding of the files to UTF-8. I just don't know if python/vs would play nicely with UTF-8 characters outside the standard ASCII set.

3. Yeah, this is not your fault, it happens for me with the english csv also. Probably a resolution issue, i'm running VS at 640x480 windowed.

4. It looked handmade, thank you for the effort. :D

5. Actually that's called plagarism... please state things in your own words or at least heavily paraphrase unless that is not possible. Unless you mean that you copied in definitions in english and translated them...

6. Thanks for the tipoff. I'll leave it as-is for now, but please set it back to the default when you post the next version of master_part_list.csv.

Hello

Again to 5.
I rewrote the rotgut and the other two parts with my own words,
now I can sleep well with it and it never will be a problem.

Again to 6.
I translated it to entry 350, there is on page 4 one version without the hack,
and one version with the hack.

Again about this hack, The ship Llama can be upgraded 1 time with add_reactor capacitance theoretically
The dostojevsky can be upgraded 4 times theoretically
The franklin 15 times theoretically, this explains why the reactor is so weak,
A robin can be upgraded 3 times theoretically
But it is impossible because add_reactor_capacitance needs 20 tons of upgrade volume,
and I don't know even one ship which has more than 16 tons of upgrade volume.

If you talk to one of the administrators, please mention or discuss this.

About the translation, I refresh my english, sometimes I feel like I'm in school again.
now I know, what is kudzu, a japanese plant, which grows too well in the USA,
but the combination between "goop" and "spray" -> entry 350, I dont know
I only found for "goop" something like "bogus, confidence game, dizziness, fake, fakes, giddiness, goldbrick, imposture, quackery, shenanigan, vertigo"

there are missing 422 -403 = 19
and then just some translations from 0 to 50 don't know what,
and there are a lot of entries empty

Finally I translated the whole master_part_list.csv file into german.

The attached files are called:
master_part_list.csv.deutsch.txt and
master_part_list.csv.deutsch-add-reactor-capacitance.txt

If you don't see these files, then log in as a member and you will see them and can download them.

So if you want to have the cargo dealer, the weapon dealer and so on in german,
download one of the following files.
At this stage, there are two german files, one only with the translation,
the other one with the translation and the add_reactor-capacitance-hack,
which allows a lot of ships to be upgraded with add_reactor_capacitance.

copy one of these files in the main vegastrike directory and rename it into:
master_part_list.csv,
this will replace the old file or even better rename your old file in master_part_list.csv.orig

Have a lot of fun. :)

Help wanted for some more translations of files into german :wink:
Now I relax for some days, enjoy the summer and the football worldchampionship,
I hope I don't have to do the rest (bartender, missions ,news ) alone,
if yes, I need until christmas.
