AUDIO TRANSLATION : Instructor voice in french

Post by ezee »

Hi !
I am volunteer to translate and produce new french Audio content .

PLANNING :

_ Recruit french actors ( male and female ) to produce new audio files .
_ Produce and replace the speeches in :
...\Vega Strike\sounds
...\Vega Strike\communications\sounds
that's for the beginning ( 600 files in 'Vega Strike\communications \sounds :mrgreen: )

I put here a link to my dropbox , in the "audio instructor" folder : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d7ejg6jp16j1049/fT0ecPMG4B
I certainly will add this link in my signature later.
( and a read me in the folder with instructions )

Feel free to comment and give your opinion ( about tha quality of the sound content - i mean artistically :wink: )
Thank you pilots ! 8)

Hello!
The documentation mentioned by Klauss in the other thread is here:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/ ... ice_Acting
The paragraph named "Creating the Voice for the Ship's Translator" lists the steps used to add the radio effect to most of the current audio, they're done in Audacity but you can achieve the same result with Cubase.
As for getting more Oswald-like, you may try lowering your pitch by 1 or 2 semitones, or using RoVee VST (http://www.g200kg.com/en/software/rovee.html)

Oh yeah clone wolf , thank you man !
I will check that , sure !
Good day to ya .

Edit : I have a 25mega .ogg file to present to you , it's my first attempt in one shot .
I will cut the file in parts and work then with lipsync ( i've done some tests ingame already , pretty cool but not perfect ... )
Correct with the headphone , but clips with the speaker , probably need a peak limiter .
( i worked with headphones at night ... :mrgreen: )

Hi .

I've just found the Quest_tutorial.py that is the script for my audio translation of the Tutorial .

Now i know how to work with lipsync , i will have to edit this file and change some duration
parameters .

Look how the english version is designed :

Code: Select all

# when launching give the player some text and ask him to decide if he wants to participate
      VS.IOmessage (0,"Oswald","Privateer",self.msgColor+"Hello traveler.")
      VS.IOmessage (3,"Oswald","Privateer",self.msgColor+"My name is Oswald and I am offering flight assistance.")
      VS.IOmessage (8,"Oswald","Privateer",self.msgColor+"Would you like to refresh your space faring skills?")
      VS.IOmessage (12,"Oswald","Privateer",self.msgColor+"To participate in my tutorial mission, cut your engines with the #9999FFBACKSPACE"+self.msgColor+" key, let me approach you, and stay put until I contact you again.")
      #VS.playSound("com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet.ogg", self.player.Position(), (0,0,0))
      #VS.musicPlaySong("com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet.ogg")
      # set comm animation parameters
      # list [start,duration,anilist_entry]
      self.sequence = [[0,1,0],[3,3,0],[8,2,0],[12,7,0]]
      # set speech files
      self.speech = ["com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet_01.ogg", "com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet_02.ogg", "com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet_03.ogg", "com_tutorial_oswald/oswald_greet_04.ogg"]
The tweak will consist to adapt the duration of the sequences to my new audio clips with :

Code: Select all

 self.sequence = [[0,1,0],[3,3,0],[8,2,0],[12,7,0]]
I will experiment that , and perhaps make a tutorial in the Wiki .
( in french also ... :wink: )

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
                return ThreatLevel::None;
            }

I haven't checked it yet, so I'm speaking in general: when you record, make sure to find a good combination of recording level and distance from the microphone. A loudness meter, or even better the waveform like Audacity shows are a good help for that. Also, if Cubase shows no clipping and your speaker does, trust Cubase ;)
A pop shield is vital if you stay very close to the mic, sudden 'plosives may boom above 0 and ruin an otherwise good recording. A simpler alternative is keeping the mic out of the air flow of mouth and nose, so either at the side of the face, or at eye level.
It's a little extra work, but I'd suggest finding a good combo of elements that doesn't clip, and only then adding a limiter just as a safety measure.
And if you have a recording with good acting you want to keep, and only clipping as a problem, you may try ReLife VST; no miracles, but if the clipping is not ovewhelming, it can help.
For a project like this quality issues are not dramatic as long as the speech is comprehensible, since the radio effect steps will degrade the quality on purpose :mrgreen:

That's it !
:lol:

Well ,i worked at night and the mike was plug in my bass amplifier ( not the better setup , okay :mrgreen: ) direct to audio card.
So the eq was strange .
I have used a maximiser too , and i don't remember bein' in the red zone .
But the project was recorded in wave format , and exported in Ogg .
Perhaps the conversion was not so good .

In my pc , with headphones , i hear no cracks in the game ( yeah i have done 70% of the tutorial , but i need to tweak the Quest-tutorial.py for lipsync )

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
                return ThreatLevel::None;
            }

Oh yes, lossy compression (ogg, mp3) can actually cause compression artifacts, like intersample peaks appearing where the original had none; to prevent this I generally normalize "busy" mixes to -0.5dB before conversion, a solo voice should behave better, -0.3 may be enough most of the times. No science here, just empirical outcome :mrgreen:

Tu aimerais participer ?

Code: Select all

 if (!track.HasWeapons())
            {
                // So what are you going to threaten me with? Exhaustion gas?
