In need of ship models

Post by Beowulf »

To get this mod started I will need 3D models for the following ships:

- TIE Fighter, Z-95 Headhunter and Nebulon B frigate (any other medium size capital ship able of carrying a similar number of fighters into battle would do as well).
I'm getting my hands dirty on the Z-95 myself at the moment.

- Y-Wing and TIE Bomber
- Delta transport, Lambda shuttle and the freighter from X-Wing
- X-Wing, A-Wing and TIE Interceptor
- Lancer Frigate, Carrack Cruiser and Loronar Cruiser

You may be able to get a few of the models (X-wing at least) from the Star Wars TA mod:
http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/SWTA

Whilst they may not be final solutions (probably too low poly etc) they could be good temporary models allowing you to make progress until you find somebody to provide better models.

If models from other games help, I'd start digging for X-Wing Alliance which IMO has the most sophisticated models.

And if you're in for some custom ships, Darksaber's XWA Ultimate Craft Pack brings them to you - among with some Episode 1 2 3 ships.

I think I'll start by asking the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade team if they allow us to use their models under the GPL. If they say no I'll ask the SWTA developers. Their models are relatively low detail but surely better than anything I'm capable of doing myself right now. Thanks :)

Beowulf, just saw this and thought it could be useful:

Obviously someone managed to port XWA ships to BC, which also uses freeware modelling tools - you could ask the author for the license as well as some tips.

Hm, if these are the models that came with X-Wing Alliance I doubt it's legal to use them anywhere but in X-Wing Alliance, especially if you don't own the game. So I don't see how we could use them without the risk of getting sued (there is a very small risk that LukasArts sues us anyway since crafts like the X-Wing, the TIE Fighter etc. are their intellectual property---I doubt though that they are stupid enough to sue their fans over something like that).

Yeah, that's what I meant... ask the guy who made the pack about the license permissions he had to obtain.

Besides that, I doubt that you'll have trouble for you're not working on a commercial game. The only problem could be that the whole X-Wing series is still for sale, and somebody @ LucasArts could get the impression that this game will be a competitor to the games being sold.

I just asked the SWTA people for permission to use their models and they turned me down. They are not willing to give their models away freely. They would however be willing to share them if we would return anything of equal value (which we cannot, otherwise I wouldn't have asked in the first place...). Though I respect their decision I think it's a sad thing that not everybody embraces the spirit of the GPL...

Well, the SWTA guys don't model for a game under GNU/GPL/whatever, so it is indeed their work and their decision. There are other games out there which have star wars mods, so just google around and you might find some.

These are just the ships for the Imperial and Rebel factions, there are even more ships from other factions. It will be a lot of work to adapt these models to vegastrike, but still faster than if I had to make all of them myself :)

At least two years :)

As far as I can see right now there are just three important ships missing:

* Y-Wing
* A-Wing
* DX-9 Stromtrooper Transport

Didn't ethereal walker have an excellent model of the A-Wing? I remember seeing renders of it somewhere on this forum a few years ago...
