Attach the stderr.txt and stdout.txt files. you should be able to find them in the "bin" folder where you installed it.

These files contain any diagnostic & error reports made by the program prior to the crash that you wish to go away. These data can help to reveal the problem.

Ace123 is asking for you to include the contents (or, just the relevant portions, if you can identify them) so that the source of the problem can be more easily identified.

You can usually "attach" a file to a message post with the "add attachment" feature, for others to download. If for some reason that is not possible, you could copy these data into a new message in this thread.

wait a second i dont think it worked. it came up with a message:

Could not obtain common word list

DEBUG MODE

SQL Error : 1104 The SELECT would examine more than MAX_JOIN_SIZE rows; check your WHERE and use SET SQL_BIG_SELECTS=1 or SET SQL_MAX_JOIN_SIZE=# if the SELECT is okay

SELECT word_id FROM phpbb_search_wordmatch GROUP BY word_id HAVING COUNT(word_id) > 29376

Line : 309
File : functions_search.php

what does this mean?

It probably means that they are too big

Just paste directly into your post in the last page or two of output from both of those files as well as the first page of both. (~40 lines)

That is usually enough to determine the problem.

Code: Select all

Panic exit - mission file mission/duel.mission not found
Your copy of "vegastrike.config" is trying to load a mission file "duel.mission"

In Vega Trek, you shold be able to find duel.mission in the "missions" directory.

If you are running standard Vega Strike it would be "explore_universe.mission".

Anyway, I'm not really sure what you mean when you say "replaced the files with the original vs files"... that may have something to do it if you did not mix/match the correct files.

What files did you change?

The output claims that you are missing the "duel.mission" file.

Can you go into the mission folder and see if there is a file called "duel.mission" there?
Also, check if there is one called "explore_universe.mission"

If you open your "vegatrike.config" file (it's in the base directory) in a text editor, you should be able to replace where it says "duel.mission" with "explore_universe.mission"

Capital M. Check it for case sensitivity. Better yet, use launcher.exe as a frontend to use it. Or remove the command entirely - explore_universe is the default, any of those should work.

You could also reinstall, if you don't mind starting over. Missions are in the missions subdirectory, that's where it looks for the match.

Woah, wait, you installed Vegastrike over Vegatrek? That was a pretty dumb thing to do, as you have now found out. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, each mod should have a directory of its own. Splicing them together can have unexpected and highly damaging consequences - you'll be very, very lucky if you can salvage your save files.

You shouldn't replace anything, if you run Linux machine.
Simply untar Engine-0.4.3.tar.bz2 configure && make vegastrike ( to make binary ).
Then untar vegatrek-x-y-z.tar.bz2 and put compiled vegastrike binary into vegatrek/bin directory.
God bless you!

explore_universe is not used in Vegatrek, and would probably break things if you tried to use it. Just keep to how it ships, for crying out load, and if you fancy a change of pace use another variant of this fine engine such as Vegastrike, Privateer or PiArmada. Don't try and mod the game until you know how to - it's not hard so long as you know what you're doing, but the same can be said of quadratic equations.

Read the FAQs, or better yet ask how to do what you want to do, and someone will give you a push in the right direction. But I don't have too much confidence on how you'd cope without someone giving you a hand, what with your recent adventure.

Keep backups before you change anything - you do that, that's good.

Start with reading through unit.csv. Then take a look at the other csv files (don't open master_part_list with Excel, it causes description truncation) until you know what you're doing. Then and only then tweak things, okay?
