Faction on the HUD

Post by chuck_starchaser »

I've given plenty good arguments why the faction should be shown on the HUD, and they are falling on deaf ears.
See my thread "Transponders Revisited".
I want the factions on the HUD back.
Not only because they were in the original game and were a good
thing, but because they are NEEDED.
I just passed by a Kilrathi ship that showed as friendly, and it could
be a Kilrathi Rebel, for all I know, but there's no way to know.
I'm tired of arguing for the factions to return.
Let's just have a vote, and if the vote is no, I'll download Gemini Gold
and not bother anymore with WCU.

By the way, I did heed the fact that the factions can be turned on by editing the vegastrike.config. That's not enough for me, though; I want the factions on by default, not just for myself. I hardly ever play it anyways. I just want this to be a good game, period; otherwise why bother myself being involved with it?

there is a config variable for both factions and flightgroup and i'm all for displaying faction actually, I stopped when Priv 1.2 stopped -- and complained a bit at the time, too. :)

Faction in HUD = Good Thing (tm)

I hate having to open up the com MFD and look at the available insults to figure out if I'm looking at a retro/militia/pirate.

@Spirit:

Okay, well let's TAKE them back, then ;-)

If Jason doesn't want them, he can do whatever he wants.
We DO.

I was just very cranky, last night. I fired up WCU trying to test the new AI, early in the evening, by engaging a merchat and see what it does. It was already past midnight that I finally gave up. See my story in the Fear thread. I wanted to kill...

I hear you.

WCU is crashing like there is no tommorow right now. I have just quit any serious playing until its fixed.. for now I am just bug hunting, instead of bounty hunting.

Did you apply the latest "littleAIthingy.zip" or whatever it's called?
Klauss just found bugs in it. Check the Fear thread.

I'm sure his concern is with the cvs. I thought it was a rather dangerous policy when I heard there was no sandbox. But you can touch your executable, though, I'm sure; and pass the source changes to daniel or to klauss for peer review. What there should be is a sandbox, really; and there'd be people who'd commit to playtesting sandbox cvs versions. There always are; I would, except for compiling it myself, atm...

Doh!!!
I'm so sorry, spirit; here I was giving you hard times and you were struggling with a bigger problem than I could fathom...

I don't know python or xml, but if you have C++ things you've done you could use an extra pair of eyes to bughunt, email them to me.

can you checkout from cvs vegastrike and vega-proj and see if they compile?

Right now I can't, Spirit; I'm sooo sorry... My problem is that my PC is busted. My windows 98 installation is totally crapped out, no sound, crashes often... And I busted my Linux installation also; --completely; doesn't boot at all. And when I did cvs'ing and compiling it was in Linux. I don't have a windows compiler that works for VS; I have Bloodshed C++ and Digital Mars :D
And I don't have cvs in Windows. I downloaded Tortoise once, but it won't work under Win 98.
Add to that the fact that all my drive partitions are between 90% and 98% full... >_<

What I've been pining to do is get a new computer, Athlon 64, two Seagate 120 gig drives, the new, ultraquiet ones, and Win XP and some Linux. Maybe I should just go to the bank tomorrow and do it. I doubt I'd have the whole system up and running even by Monday, though. Installing OS's and applications may be trivial but takes tons of time. That's why I've been procrastinating...

But, spirit, with or without commit access, you can grab cvs anonymously anyhow, can't you? In the meantime, just email me your C++ files and I'll look at them.

I'm merging the latest CVS changes to my tree this weekend. They usually build fine. The latest thing that broke the VC6 build was the commands.cpp, and I made a lot of fixes there (and someone else did a lot more for the VC7 build). But, usually, things build fine.

I'll try to get mine to build, and if I do, I'll send my whole tree to you, spirit, and you can check it out. Just be careful about merging the collide table changes - they're highly experimental, and lots of those changes bring a lot of trouble.

I just finished diffing everything from sept. 13 on by hand with my stuff... when i say "by hand" i mean "sit down at kbd and manually insert or delete lines by reading from the cvs diffs on the html repository". took all morning... want me to put the source somewhere?

the only thing that is missing is the autoland zone for gemini gold (do we need that? i get the idea it's temporary anyway)

The best reason to use it is to prevent that a player can collide with a planet or space station, you know you can play a warning message on the mfd before it finally docks :)

I finally did it. $1355 poorer... Got myself the components for a new PC. The hardest part will be making room on my desk so I can work on it...
Hmmm... Maybe I should call in an air-strike...
