Two Simple Tasks For Anyone Interested

Post by spiritplumber »

(1) Can be done now: HUD image. It can be as simple as "take a screenie of a ship at the correct angle, and send me the resized screenshot".

(2) Needs latest upload (smaller, I removed sound and music for ease of use) or at least the updated units.csv which is in the small file:

Ship descriptions. They actually get displayed, so having some fluff text there would be very good -- I put some of it in already. :)

Currently uploading the updates. ^_^; Again, there is NO sound and NO music because they're in another archive.

For which ships you mean, spirit? Or you want *new* hud's for existing ships?

I mean for ships that currently don't have a HUD. :) Either style is fine at this stage... I personally prefer a picture, but that's just me.

I had half a thought of getting some program like Deep Exploration to generate a wireframe image of $SHIP at the right angle, and use that as the hud image... would that look nice? you're the art expert @_@; i can barely draw stix figures.

Ah! I though you were talking about coming up with whole new HUD's like for the tarsus, orion, whatever. The little images, you mean? Well, if there's a trick to start the game in a way that a ship you want is sitting in space, it's just a matter of pressing , then scale the shot, I suppose?

Wouldn't it be easier to get the model in a workable format (.blend, .obj, or something else that you can convert to work in a renderer) and render the shot? Maybe set up your own light sources?

It's easy enough to just make a white background (to make the ship incredibly easy to crop out), hack a system to display it, switch to per-pixel specular lighting and then just take the screenshot. This is how I did the redeemer HUD image in vegastrike.

VS has camera controls that are robust enough for the purpose. If you seriously need help, I wrote an article about advanced screenshot taking on the wiki:

I never knew that about VS, actually. Interesting. Thanks for the tip.

You can edit your savegame to give yourself said ship, yep :) and use a white background for a star system (like, troy, temporarily) and take a screenie.

I haven't done so yet because I'm working on other stuff (bug hunting atm) and I was asked if there was anything anyone could do ^^;

Do you have a list of ships that need the icons, spirit?

Pretty much all the ships that are not in Priv Remake. I do have icons for the Ferret and Sabre but that's it.

DoH! I can't do it right now. I screwed up my linux installation trying to upgrade it, and in windooze I don't have office or excell. So I can't edit the save file. I could burn the disks and install Fedora Core 4 afresh, but I'll be upgrading my PC next paycheque a week from now, so might as well hold on till then. If you can wait, I can do it after a week.

You can edit your save file with notepad :) it's what I do. Just change the ship name near the beginning of the file, it should be right after the money.

I hope your pc gets better soon! :D

I'm just praying it may live for one more week, till I replace it with an Athlon 64 system I'm planning to get, but thanks for the well-wishing.. ;-)
I'll try the notepad trick.
