[REQUEST] WCU Splash Screen

Post by crouton »

Request: WCU Splash Screen

We need a splash screen for Wing Commander Universe. Currently there is no 'official' screen at all; we're using the Privateer Remake project's version.

The new screen will be displayed at the beginning of the standalone installer process, as well as every time the game loads. Since WCU is attempting to encompass the entire Wing Commander mythos, a good splash screen should have some of the following:
  • A space background.
  • A fighter-class ship (Confed, Kilrathi, or both)
  • A capital-class sihp (Confed, Kilrathi, or both)
  • 'Wing Commander Universe' in a font that compliments the WC games and the other items on the screen.
If this sounds like too much, don't worry. I'll take any and all submissions, but including the above highlights will get more attention. You can either post links here or email them to me directly at agcrouton@gmail.com. You will receive full credit for your work (as long as you aren't copying someone else's) and the gratitude of legions of WC fans. :)

Here's a background.jpg.

If you use it, just cover the Russian space station with a ship, but make sure that the light on the ship comes from behind you and slightly to the left; otherwise it wil disagree with the cloud's shadows.

Did a little fishing around the older threads here, and found this gem:
http://www.snl.onthanet.nl/cisst/art/splash.png by Cisst. This looks eerily familiar to what Cyberion did; not sure if they're the same person, one extended the other's work, etc..

But it looks good. The Privateer Remake part is probably unnecessary, though.

Here's a great example of a splash screen, this one proposed for FreeOrion:

I'm trying to get a good shot of a fleet battle... :)

Some of the folks over at WCNews have been producing some rather good splash screens. Check it out:

Indeed! Why not grab the last 3 and pick one at random each time the program starts? ;-)

Why stop at three? I think 4-5 would be enough to include in the base installer. And then we can always have a splash screen pack. :)

I'd just include all of the decent ones in the main installer- VS itself has a ton of splash screens and nobody complains.
