A Proposal

THE BIG WCU TODO FILE

SHIPS:

Dorkathi transport
Sheffield cruiser
Ralari or Ralatha
Bengal carrier
Kilrathi assault shuttle (recycle Dorkritha model maybe. I have come to the conclusion that Dork is Kat for Transport.)
Anything anyone feels like doing really ^^;

PHASE SHIELDS:

Largest ships without phase shields are the Paradigm, Caernaven and
Kamekh. Everything bigger
has phase shields (reload rate REALLY FAST).
Can be defeated with leech guns, leech missiles or milspec torpedos,
which become available after the Terrel plot missions. Milspec torpedos
are WC2 style and take forever to lock too. Main ship guns (antimatter,
phase transit) directly affect armor. Also need to make capship missile,
= torpedo with less lock time. Torpedos are have their own AI so that
they can try to avoid flak but can be blown up.


NEW WEAPONS:

Leech Gun
Leech Missile
Torpedos WC2 style
Stormfire Gatling
Porcupine Mines
Fake Turret (bought at pirate bases, holds 5~10 cargo slots, not searched during contraband searches, no guns)

ASTEROIDS:

Null base unit. Level 1 (touchable/destroyable) subunits use a single
rock mesh, off-centered so that it moves if it rotates. Destroyable.
Units.csv entry for asteroid field will have tons of subunits there.
Occasional bigger rock. Mix between WC1/WC2 and WC3 style asteroids.

COMMERCE MODEL:

Planets:

Agricultural keep same
Oceanic same as agri, food cost less, less variety
Pleasure keep same
Rocky works same way as mining base
Industrial buys refined products, sells finished

(all others are uninhabited and use the "parking orbit" dock screen)
(exception: scripted planets like ND, Oxford, Earth...)

Bases:

Mining keep same
Refinery buys ore, sells refined
Pirate keep same
Civilian similar to new const
Military similar to perry
Research sells software, AI...
Factory buys refined, sells finished
FighterBase similar to perry
AsteroidFighterBase see above, also sells ore
Relay Sat parking orbit screen (refueling point)
AsteroidDepot sells ordnance

military bases of relevant factions have that faction's technology,
e.g. tachyon for Confed, leech for BW....

capships: merchant drayman are random (high stddev for everything),
military ships buy food, dirty magazines...

Good trade route example: Agri - Refinery - Industrial - Agri


COSMIC MODEL:

Move Gemini to "bigger planets" standard, and fix autogen so that
it looks between VS and Priv. When VS supports atmo flying this way
we are ready for it.

Script more systems as time allows.

Add things to wcuniverse.xml to specify which starbases to create as
well as which planets, if none specified, randomize as it is now.

Fine tune siege system.

At least one Kilrathi rebel faction (at Gorah Khar), can also be
used to generate rabble in Kilrathi systems.

BASE INTERIORS:

Possible to use WC2 screenshots in "doing a confed/bw tour of duty"
type missions?

New bases use sprites from existing bases, but changed a bit.

***need kilrathi fixers/bartenders!!!!***

Add Tri-System somewhere appropriate maybe? (Maybe it's separated
from the only out-tri-system jump point by a VERY long chain of
autopilot-disabling asteroids so it's a PITA to fly to/from, thus
explaining why it's isolated)


PLOTS:

Anything goes here :) Possibilities:


* Some way for player to get green gun back, maybe rival privateer
now has it, some sleaze like Menech to fight.

* Serve in the navy for a bit as prerequisite to buy Confed/BW ships.
Use specially coded capship with WC2 style interior, plotline fails
if player lands elsewhere unless so instructed, or takes other
missions
.


* Take on a major Kindred-like corporation, reward is own base (maybe
in the newly discovered Tri-System). Minimal base management interface.
For player, products locally produced in base cost very little. Base
is on a frontline and thus may be sieged and lost.

* Romantic subplot? Please?

* Things that tie in WC3/WC4/Prophecy -- seeing Nephilim ships if you
go into Hari territory or go back to Delta Prime perhaps, possibility
to come across Behemoth or Black Lance Base under construction, etc.

* At least one cameo by Paladin and the Bonnie Heather II... super
tricked out Galaxy maybe... hehe

* Quest that results in being able to own a proper capship, maybe
made to spec (see Delphinus in current game). OR, lease of a capship
to do covert ops agains the Kilrathi (Paradigm or Durango)

* Gorah Khar subplot that results in allowing you to buy Kat ships

* Occasional bounty hunter specifically targeting player once he is
famous

* Confed black ops guy who wants to abduct player to extort
information about Steltek -- possible further Steltek entanglement

* Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica or Lexx mini spoof plotline?
Example: old guy and young guy hiring player to take them to a
swordfighting tournment to happen on a space station, turns out
they find out space station houses some sort of terror weapon so
it must be blown up with the help of player.

* Satellite of Love: sells robots, movies

* Possibility to mine asteroids -- blowing them up releases
ore "cargo" that looks like a small rock polygon wise but can be
tractored+sold normally. Not too viable economically but people
could appreciate the touch. See game Starscape.

Wow...where to start? Well, here goes:

SHIPS:

Looks good. BTW, it would be nice if, when you're in a Cat's ship, they don't spot you as human until you open fire or until you've exchanged a few comms.

PHASE SHIELDS:

Looks good.

NEW WEAPONS:

Leech Gun & Leech Missile-Cool.
Torpedos WC2 style-Good. I've been wanting those on a few occasions...
Stormfire Gatling-as if just one stormfire wasn't bad enough...can hardly wait!
Porcupine Mines-Good idea.
Fake Turret (bought at pirate bases, holds 5~10 cargo slots, not searched during contraband searches, no guns)-That'll make Brilliance running easier. Just make sure you can pick which cargo goes in the turret and which goes in the hold.

ASTEROIDS:

Yes! At last, asteroids that I can blow up! That my enemies can run into! That I can bounce off at just the right angle so that the volley aimed at me slams into one of enemies...sorry, got a litle excited :)

COMMERCE MODEL:

Planets:

You might add "Seafood." Availiable only at Oceanic and in high demand on Pleasure (it's a delicacy...).

Bases:

Nice and complex.

COSMIC MODEL:

Can you make so we can siege bases if we've got the credits to buy assault shuttles, capships, fighters and the other trimmings of a siege force? Please?

Good-I've been working on a subplot involving the Kilrathi rebels.

The Confed's are after you because they want info, the militia's after you 'cause the Confeds told 'em to, the Bounty Hunters are after you because Confed's put a bounty on you, the Cats are after you because the Confed's are after you, you get the picture. Hey, maybe the Blacks Ops guy could be a Black Ops girl, so we can put Spirit's romantic subplot in...

The Satellite of Love is from the series Mystery Science Theater 3000, which I suggest you google for. It's fun.

About the Behemoth and BL... I meant in a cameo way, it's stuff that's under construction and you can't touch. Just as a reference thing.

About the other stuff... I try ^^; I do think that the "emergency mining" bit is something that can be put in to add variety.

Siege wise... "Siege" is what the battle system is referred to in the code internally. Buy a fleet? Strikes me as a bit too much... Buy one custom capship (at the end of a long quest in which you have to make it so a shipyard owner owes you a huge favor, THEN you have all the weapons/raw materials/etc. you need which means a lot of cargo runs, and so on) why not. For kicks try to play a WCU game with "delphinus" as your ship.


Another thought: Asteroid fighter bases should shoot asteroid kinetic missiles in addition to asteroid fighters. Up to the player to see which are which, HEADS DOWN!

I think that the first thing that needs to happen is to re-interrogate the PRIV branch back into the WCU, in terms of ships that is. Then next to the make sure that all ships are converted into at the very least the OBJ with MAT data. If it is BXMF, that is good also, but we should always keeps the OBJ as a back up, especially if someone want to remap the object.

The inflight stuff is slowly but surely getting done -- we're almost there as far as number and types of ships, autogen etc. go. The main thing that is needed are:


(1) BASE INTERIORS AND BACKGROUNDS. Kilrathi bases would have their specific look, so would docking to a Confed Paradigm or other capship. That would need a Kilrathi bartender and fixers among other stuff. (You should at least be able to land on Kat bases on Ghorah Khar and Ntanya, no?)

(2) SYSTEMS. The autogen MOSTLY works and creates good starting-point systems now, but some stuff should still be scripted... specifically, can someone adapt Vegastrike's Sol system and make a good Kilrah system, to start with? I'm REALLY not good with distances so I can't do a good job on that myself.

BTW, a little while back I flew into Sol system, wanting to visit Earth (home, sweet home). But when I got there, the system was filled with nothing but asteroids. Yikes, looks like somebody fried all nine planets! My question is, was that supposed to happen, and has it been fixed (this was several versions ago)?

Not supposed to happen ^^; in fact systems need to be scripted.

Main things to do now are:

- Script systems (Sol, Kilrah... etc.)
- Open factions.xml and make sure that relevant ship types hate each other appropriately.

Spirit, I talked to you on crius.net forums about the system scripting. I'll give it a go.

Is there a person/webpage with info on how the current .system files are arranged? I'm looking for how the planets/jumppoints/etc are arranged.

Ah, thanks for the thought on that, Spiritplumber.

Once I had that bit of information, I did some searching. The new wiki is not in place yet found it here [ http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/media ... ction=edit ]

and the old one does not appear to be there. I get an error part way down the page, and there is no more after that.

Okay, the inflight gfx's are mostly done for now.

NEW TODO:

(0) Asteroids. WC2 or WC3 style?

(1) Put turrets and dock ports in appropriate places on the new bases (capships are done)

(2) Turrets: Maybe give laser turrets more range in order to defeat "park and plink" exploit

(3) Autogen: Do we want small (priv style) or realistic planets? I'd rather have realistic.

(4) Autogen: Got to make sure ships/factions are spawned properly

(5) Autogen: Capship classes maybe? Right now it's too random, a faction could get a carrier or a transport.

(6) AI: We need more AI types.

(7) Meow.

(8) Base interiors: Any takers? Esp. kilrathi bases...

Here's an idea, making cap-ship turrets increase the default weapon range of any weapon mounted on them, by, say, 25%.
(3) Autogen: Do we want small (priv style) or realistic planets? I'd rather have realistic.
I vote for "realistic" (bigger, anyhow) too. Gas giants should be humongous. One problem right now is that the distance from a planet you auto to is a constant time the planet's radius, so no matter how big or small a planet is, you always see it the same size coming out of Auto; the only difference being the time it takes flying down to it, or around it. Maybe the distance should be 1 times the planet radius plus a constant; but I don't know how to mod the code for that.

Is there anyway to allow the player to have a customized texture for their ship(s)?
I did a few tests, and added my logo to the side of my Centurion, but naturally, every Centurion has it, too.
Just a thought.
I realize it may be impossible, but it never hurts to ask.

The crude way of doing it:

It's possible, but it will take some editing. If you define the model you want as a new class, and you copy original model file's + add your own texture, you can fly around with your own logo & ofcourse edit your save so it points to the new class. Problem is, the moment you switch ships, you need to repeat the steps.

the game always looks for factionname_texture.png

like for isntacnce I can customize my centurion by making

privateer_body.jpg
instead of body.jpg

and so forth :-)

no text editing necessary

Well, so far, I've just been pasting my Panther emblem on existing skins.
However, as I really love panels, I've been messing with redoing the Demon's skin.
(I really hate it.)

I have another suggestion. I dunno if this is already being done or not since pretty much all I have seen are development type 'releases', but maybe a readme file specific to WCU?

Also include in it a version number (and|or) release date, to make it easier to ask people what version they are using?
