I've been playing with 6xAA and 16xAF, with temporal AA enabled. My specs are:
128MB 9800 Pro
P4 2.4C @ 3000 MHz
Asus P4P800 motherboard
Temporal AA forces Vsync on, and my refresh rate at 1600x1200 is 85 Hz. When I first tried these graphics settings, I was concerned that they would be too much, as they obviously would bring my system to its knees in any fully 3D app. But, I figured that since only the ships and bases are 3D in Privateer Remake, I'd give it a shot. I flew around for a while in 009b and things were fine - the framerate stayed at 85 constantly.
Now, in the development version, framerate drops bigtime in or around asteroid fields. Did anything about asteroids change from 009b? Or did I just not fly into any asteroids in my previous experimentations?

I didn't change anything in roid fields
you can turn down some stuff, but I don't think it'll affect your framerate ...
sorry pal guess you just gotta crank down those (ridiculous ) settings

Dan, did we ever get those asteroids I made with multiple levels working? I know that the 40 models and 5 textures I made was overkill, however I still think that you should include a few models with one texture. It should me the Asteroids more visually appealing.
The should be under the Miscellaneous directory in WCU

I know you believe you understand what you think I said.
But I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

ya I remember the asteroids...didn't get them into game because I haven't had time...
I did however make sure that if we were to get them in game you could blast individual roids...which is kinda cool

Yeah I am trying to remember who said they wanted to work on that. I believe they were going to take some of my models and crack them. However for a quick fix, just take the model and when it is destroyed, create 3-4 new smaller asteroids with the other models. it should work well.
