Sweet, short, and to the point:
It's possible to have turrets in the game, but is there a way that I can enter a 3rd person view that allows me to pan round my ship to aim these turretss? I know I can use the side, rear, front, etc. viewmodes, but is there no 3rd person style rotating camera that uses the ship as the axis of this rotation?
I ask this for the sake of modding rather than gameplay, as I'd love to design some Freelancer-style fighter turrets (Mostly powerful spinal-mounted turrets that the player can aim with the mouse cursor in it's firing arc, but the game features the turret view as I described above, making it pretty easy to utilize the turrets.)

Re: "Turret View"
Welcome aboard Kraiz it is possible It's just that the current AI routines that take over the piloting of your ship are still rather primitive so your liable to have your ship shot out from under you I forget the command that the view-point shift was bound to but you of the regulars should chime in It's not a 3rd person view you are in the turret their is a turret AI and IT's quite good at keeping boggies off your 6 Have a look at the key-bindings page(hit Esc while in game) if their then ckeck the key-bindings section of vegastrike.config have fun.

Here. TurretControl switches cockpit to turrets, you can even toggle views as usual. Normally it's best left to turret AI, though.
