Before the move about six or seven years ago, and the requisite going through old junk, we had some old Sinclairs kicking around the house. Mom's computer classes involved punch cards! How do the alt and ctrl key bindings work on macs? I know they are called different things, perhaps three main mapping sets?

ok, kill the remake and move to Priv parallel universe. You will get much MUCH better fps. I STOPPED playing the remake when i made my system horribly slow, even on a high end machine (at the time). Most of my issue was the use of a 3D ship on a 2d base landing screen. For whatever reason I think the remake is bugged too much on the data side which is causing the issues. Try a fresh install of Gemini Gold and parallel universe and tell me how the fps goes.
Because of YOU Arbiter, MY kids? can't get enough gas. OR NIPPLE! How does that mkae you feeeel? ~ Halo

Love that thread drift!!
If you want the most faithful Original Privateer experience look up DosBox and install your old copy. I know the expanded universe and ships is what drew me to some of the VS based Privateer games. Then the most promising one (WCU) kinda died.

WCU was never a game, just a bunch of assets people could build games on top of.

IIRC, PU is built on top of WCU.

Something like that, then parred way back. Last I saw everything outside of Gemini was deactivated, A few updates to the three main game ships... Might play it again But I have the setup I mentioned above, so if I want to play "Privateer" that's what I play.

Man, talk about a stroll down memory lane!

Yeah, I used an old game pad controller or some such for a mouse with my 64. Remember what those cost? Like fifteen hundred for a full system and it didn't include a hard drive. Strictly tape and single or double sided 5 1/4" floppy. Gah!
klauss wrote: The config isn't different, but SDL in linux sometimes has a hard time picking up certain key modifiers, or key-modifier combinations, so some key bindings are impossible to hit in linux, depending on the keymap being used.

We really should ship two preconfigured key bindings at least: linux and windows.
That could explain some of it. Especially between the two boxes. Even with copying the file over, I can't get AutoKey working in Boo-Boo.

You could avoid a lot of trial and error by looking the messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
It does, supposedly.
Here it is.

I really am thankful for the code box. Getting the Max size limit error. On to the next post.

Came across as a quote, code box has a scroll bar too, nice for long stretches.

Edit: never mind, you must have seen that....

It was a nightmare on this last trial.

I loaded, took out my Gleaner from mining base to Atlantis. Launched. When I finally had more than 3 FPS, I undocked, set course and engaged auto pilot.

I went to get a cup of coffee, swept out the garage, finished my coffee, sat back down and had to press Y to disengage combat mode, set it to full throttle, then stand on the AB key to get docked. Took forever.

THEN, as Atlantis was loading, the screen went blank. There were some noise lines in green and some assorted colours in the top third, then the screen started cycling between NO SIGNAL and signal, flashing the monitor's error message, "No Video Signal" then to black, then "No Video Signal".

Took a hard boot to get back up and running.

Anywho, there you be. Hope I'm not driving you bonkers.

Sure did. I caught it and fixed it moments later.

Thanks for the catch. =)

Sounds almost hardware, posibly over heating. Does your video card have a fan or a heat sink? If a fan is it spinning while on? (They do go out.) Try some other graphics intensive programs. I think you said you have multiple OSs? Do you get similar errors in others?

It's integrated on the MoBo. Has a huge heat sink. No, I don't think it's overheating. If it were, a hard reboot wouldn't bring it back until it cooled. That could take ages given the size of the heat sink. You need to remember that heat-sinks take away heat, yet they remain hot as they dissipate heat. No, it MAY be hardware, true. The chip COULD be failing.

Phoenix, I'm not playing the new PU. I don't have the machine for it. Not enough oomph in the video department. When I get a few C together, I'll get a new MoBo, some RAM, a 10TB HDD and a nice, 2G nVidia video card with HDMI in/outputs so I can use the televisions as monitors. Think of it. 42" wide-screen monitors! You sit up close and you're really and truly IN the game. Until then, I'll make due with an old 3G dual core proc. and maybe a gig or gig-and-a-half of shared RAM on a 22" Hanns-G 16 X 10 monitor.

Curious, everything seems fine in X. Except that your monitor connection was flapping near the end.

What are the first lines of stdout/stderr in VS? (they talk about the graphics drivers and capabilities).

You should be able to run PPU as the svn (not the cubemap version) still runs on either .4.3 or .5.0 i think, probably the later. I was running it on a single core Athlon64 way back. Heres a question though. In the bios setting can you increase the shared memory or your onboard video? the few i've had to deal with would allow either 256mb or 512mb max, defaulting to 128mb though.

Relatively easy test. Try an add on card... Then I work in a computer shop so we have a few pulled one lying around to test with. But yeah, if it's a heat sink it won't be overheating easily. There's bad memory addresses (rare), software issues (common but unlikely if the display is loosing signal esp. w/ the lines), loose connectors. Sight-unseen I'm just guessing :( Wish I could do more. I do think your preformance issues and dying video are related though.

Good point, phoenix! more memory should boost preformance on an on-board adapter.

Yeah, but at the cost of system memory. That was the one good thing about the 6100 onboard sets, then ran system memory much more efficiently and I think some of the higher end onboard setups had a small amount of dedicated memory as well (i think)

I didn't used to be this dense. I can find them in doze, but I can't seem to find them in Linux.
Running as a user, the files would be in the home directory for that user.
Running as root, they should be in root, or in the VS home directory -- the place I extracted to and installed from. No dice. I even looked in /usr/share/games! I'm at a loss. I installed VS to /home/vegastrike-0-5-0. That way, I could share the game and files. So when I look to the user's directory, /home/wendy, I see the directory .vegastrike-0.5.0, but I still can't find the files! Looking at root's files, I run into the same problem. What have I done wrong?

Here goes another reboot. I'll have to check. It's been a while since I was in this thing's BIOS. Good thought though.

Lol, don't worry. It's not quite so intuitive.

In linux, it's not stored anywhere, it comes out the console.
So you have to launch the game and redirect output to a file, like so:

Code: Select all

$ ./vegastrike > stdout.txt 2> stderr.txt

Nice idea -- If I want to take the system out of the case OR buy a new video card. Remember, this is a slimline desktop. Even THEN, I'd have to get a PCI card. I have a number of AGP cards ranging from 8MB to 64MB, but the only PCI card I have only has 2MB of Video RAM. This box doesn't have an AGP slot.

The resounding THUD you just heard and very probably felt, was my head hitting the desk.
I sit there and WATCH the game in text format when I'm playing it in windowed mode. I'll run it again. <sigh> Wanna bet I can't replicate the crash?

THat's why I can play VS with very little frame dropping on my Mandrivel box! It's a Biostar TForce 6100 board and it's MAXED out for Video RAM versus System RAM. Sadly, THAT board only has a 64MB window. Still, it dedicates that RAM for video, so there is very little system slowing when I play the game.

Now for a system reboot, a look at BIOS for any possible tweaks, then a reboot to see if I can replicate the failure. Anyone want to place odds on whether or not I can get it to replicate the failure?

Stdout is an empty file.
stderr is as follows:

bash: ./vegastrike: No such file or directory
