Official IRC Room

OK Guys, here it (finally) is...

irc.freenode.net
#vegastrike

i'm hoping most of the devs will hang around in there, and it will be another useful tool for communication for things where the forums aren't immediate enough, and msn is too buggy ;) However, the rules are:

- No private messaging the devs if you are not a dev (devs know who they are)
- No complaining if nobody answers - people idle you know
- For matters which do not warrant being discussed in real time, or if you frequently connect/disconnect, please use the forum.
- Griefing will not be tolerated
- The usual no spamming, etc. applies.
- Offenders will be banned from IRC, and possibly from the forums as well.

Any questions/comments then say so on IRC, or reply to this thread.

I'm there, and have been for a couple of months already :). It's too bad that I tend to lack the skill to help people beyond "ask the forum, they know better"..

I managed to talk my net admin into opening the IRC port for this. I usually don't share my good cookies. (Mine!)

Do you hear, that whisper, calling unto you
O'childe of the shore
As have your brethern before you
beckoning, to sail to those distant lands
Come
embrace me, your mistress
Upon the coldest sea

How do you get to the irc room? Do you have to download mIRC and pay for it or what?

mIRC is one option, for Windows there is also HydraIRC(free) and XChat2(shareware).

There are a number of clients available for all platforms, and even some browser-based java/cgi/other-scripting-language versions that can be used without installing anything.

See the Wikipedia list of IRC clients:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IRC_clients

No matter what client you choose, you will want it to connect to the server "irc.freenode.net" and then join "#vegastrike"

If the client supports URIs like "irc://...." you can just click this link: irc://irc.freenode.net/vegastrike

You can always go to www.ircatwork.com. There's no need for a client, its very n00b friendly, and you can access it behind school or workplace firewalls without having to bother with packet encrytion and protocol tunneling.

Chatzilla still uses the default ports, so it won't get around work/school proxies. There are, however, sites that have cgi-irc available, which will get you around firewalls. Aeon already mentioned Irc@work, which is one such site, another site I know of that has their cgi-irc open enough to use is http://www.axenhammer.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi

And others can be found by googling for "cgi irc"
