VS from RPMs gives Segfault.

Greetings to all.

I've watched this game closely for some time, and it looks really interesting and well developed -- a (much needed) proof that Free Software games are possible.

1. Finally, I downloaded the circa 180 Mb of the source, which refused to compile. To where I could find out, it seems that the "vslauncher" binary is not building, as well as the "vegastrike" one.

After some unsuccessful fiddling, I finally opted for downloading the RPMs instead:
vegastrike-0.4.1-gcc3.2_1.i386.rpm
vegastrike-data-0.4.1D-1.noarch.rpm
which I found here.

2. When trying to install the first one, it complains that package OpenAL is not installed, but I have both the "openal" and "openal-devel" packages, which I fetched with the apt-get.

3. I forced the installation anyway. I can now run "vssetup", and "vslauncher". I can start a new game, but after one or two splash screens the game crashes with a segfault. The terminal displays a huge output, including references to files not found/loaded. You can read it at the end of this post.

The "Options" button does nothing, and terminal outputs "Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x3c2)!".

Can you tell me
a) How to solve the OpenAL dependency problem and/or
b) where to find an apt-get rpm repository for Vega Strike and its dependencies?
c) Or how to get it to work as it is now?

Update: I have just installed "OpenAL-0.0.6.CVS030517-1.i386.rpm" which I found here, and the terminal output is still the same, but the "vegastrike-0.4.1-gcc3.2_1.i386.rpm" stopped comlaining at installation.

I may also add that I'm running Fedora Core 1 on an AMD XP 1900+, 512 MB RAM and an nVidia with 64 MB DDR.

1) This is a problem with the way we built the rpm, it is safe to ignore (if you know you've got the right libs :-) )

2) Sorry, don't know if one even exists...

3) can you run it in gdb and get a backtrace for us? run from the data dir: 'gdb vegastrike'
then type 'run'.....and when it crashes, type 'backtrace full'....post the output here :-)

Thank you for your reply.

I've finally downloaded an OpenAL rpm that the vegastrike rpms seem to like, so that's no longer a problem.

Hmm... Attempting to run the game as suggested (with gdb) results in the X windows becoming frozen (or the game at least -- but there is no return to the console as there was when running vegastrike alone), and I'm forced to reboot with ctrl+alt+backspace.

I should also mention that, after running vegastrike from a console, and after the game segfaults back to the desktop, the console becomes unusable (no bash prompt). The message "Thank you for playing!" is the last reaction of the poor thing, and while it sits there it's eating resources like mad. I can kill it, though, and everything becomes nice again.

hmm.....that's really screwed up :-P

are you up for compiling the source rpm? It should be easy enough to do on fedora :-) You will end up (after an hour or so) with a normal rpm that will work on your system :-)

If so, let me know and I can write up some quick instructions :-)
