Used to play vegastrike awhile back. Am trying to install it on my laptop running Ubuntu 13.10. Have downloaded the SRC data music sounds and extra tar.bz2 files. Have also downloaded vegastrike-dbg 0.5.1.r1-3_i386.deb. the deb package installed OK but when I try running veg strike from terminal nothing happens. How do I make it all work? Am really wanting to play again.

Which version of Python does 13.10 have installed if it is 3.0 you will need to install 2.7 one of the branches in the svn repo has a Python 3.0 version but I don't think we have any .deb's for that branch yet. BTW adding an other Python will not conflict with the original.

It has version 3 by default. How do I go to 2.7? Have tryed the manual install with no luck. All the vegastrike files are in my home folder. When I get to the cmake it doesn't know what to do. Do I need to type anything after cmake or make?

Edit: I did download the 13.04 deb and installed it. All it did though is make a empty folder .vegastrike

Most likely because cmake can not find any source code to actually compile as it is not part of the .deb and I am not sure about how to install Python 2.7 when you already have version 3.0 especially on 'buntu systems.

Thinking about changing Linux distro to have better luck. Maybe OpenSUSE or something. Ubuntu has too many issues with games.

Its like they don't trust the users or doubt the user intelligence. Its been a huge turn off. They want to be the next Microsoft I for one value privacy and love changing source codes as a on and off programer. Am leaning towards OpenSuse or Fedoria.

Kind of. Expecting that the users have no idea of what they want is a classic Apple feature, IIRC. And this Unity abomination looks like a thing made more out of Mac fanboy enthusiasm than for usability.
As to the switch, it's easier to fall back to Debian as is or with a few additions, perhaps even from Ubuntu repositories. I switched to Xubuntu for now, since Debian got less problem with fglrx legacy, but if it's already dead-end anyway, well...

Yea am looking at Debian as well. Its got a lot of good things in it.

Let me see if I can build a deb for 13.10

It should be as simple as installing python27-dev. It'll take some time though, since I've got to update my old old old ubuntu machine to do the testing.
