Game crash on start-up, tried and tried and tried...

Post by garim »

Mornin' folks.
First, I love the game. I've been playing on and off since version 0.4.3. I was playing ver 0.5.0 on my old PC for a while, until the PC died. Now, with my new laptop, I downloaded 0.5.0, and it crashed. So, I downloaded the newest version I could find, and it crashed. I hunted the forum for a few days, and tried every fix I could find, to no avail. So, I uninstalled, then reinstalled to get fresh error reports, posted below. Any help would be fabulous. This is a great game, and I really want to play it again, since it has replaced all other space flight sims in my book.
Thanks

Google says: http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/178746-bex-error.html

"Looking at the Exception code provided in your crash report: (c0000417) An invalid parameter was passed to a C runtime function.
Unfortunatly this is a big within the application itself (Not Windows or DEP), You may be able to use a compatibility mode to get it working but because it's caused by the game using the Windows API incorrectly there might not be much you can do unless the developer issues a patch for the game (if there isn't already one available)."

I think the game has a vcredist_x86.exe. Is it installed, and is it the correct one?

Btw I've seen something akin to this this when messing with different runtimes. Welcome to the dll hell...

Did you try SVN?

There were a few related fixes there that didn't go into the beta2 installer. Namely, r13315.

Ya, SVN exec is from r13324, which post-dates that fix I mentioned.

Tried the SVN, no luck. No windows error, just a black screen and then desktop. I've tried every compatibility mode, and run as admin. I've tried lowering all the graphics settings. Nothing seems to work.

First welcome aboard just how did you get the svn download if you did not follow this guide http://wiki.vega-strike.org/HowTo:Checkout_SVN and it is not a good idea to actually run the exec directly within your local repository as you will be updating it to stay current  and running the exec will corrupt that repo.

Could have pulled just the win32 folder or as I did, the entire trunk

You only need the data and bin folders. And to play use Tortoise's Export function(right-click on the data folder TortoiseSVN--Export)this will export only the necessary files and not the data base that keeps track of each file's history the reason for the exort so the data base does not become corrupted  I usually use a folder named Vegastrike directly in the root of my C: drive something like this C:\Vegastrike\VS13348 the sub-folder is the current version number then create a new folder within VS133348 call it bin then export the the bin folder from your local repo to it.Run setup Win7 will probably complain that the program did not install correctly click that it did(it's just complaining about the name  ) then double-click the vegastrike.exe you may also have to run vcredist_x86 if Win7 says you have runtime errors.Hope this is clear enough if not just post any questions you have.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I never had any problems playing directly in the working copy.

In ".vegastrike"?

In linux, ".vegastrike" is on the user's home directory, so the one in the repo isn't used other than to get the New_Game savegame and music playlists, and of course it isn't written to.

Perhaps a similar move should be done in Windows? (Putting this stuff in Application Data?)

If you use the installer download that is what happens  but not with the raw working copy though. It is really trivial to do the export just time and HD space which I have lots of

I too play from where I download it without issue, and I have XP. I do have some files marked with a "?" using Tortoise SVN .

the files marked ? are probably the compiled python files (from py to pyc), other than that I'm not sure what else would be created that would be marked with a ?

Anything and everything that it does not recognize. The vegastrike.config is regularly marked with a "!" in a red circle. Still updates and runs just fine.

a ! indicates changes to a file, ? indicates a file that is not part of the repo

And a yellow ! in a triangle is a conflicted file. My point was that running from where SVN drops it has not presented an issue for me.

Yeah, I think the only time it might screw something up is if you modify some of the python scripts and then someone updates the svn, when you update it could cause some serious issues.
