About shaders nvidia and ubuntu. May be a solution part?

Post by fedorax »

Hello,

Config:

Ubuntu 10.10
Graphic card geforce 8800 GT

After compile vegastrike SVN i've encounter many freeze of xorg.
The first problem was a very dirty radiator of my C.G.
The second problem is in official driver nvidia.

After a radical cleaning of fan and radiator and install the nvidia driver found on PPA repository ( Actually 260.19.21 ) the result is not perfect but better, i can play whith average shader ( But no more ), extreme detail 1280x1224 or 1600x1200 32 bits windowed.
Dont encounter any problem after two hours of game.

Maybe mu 4Gb RAM and pentium quad are helpfull for this ?

That sound like shader usage make the CG too hot and remember me an old version of nvidia driver which had a bad gestion of gg fan.

May be this can help somebody ?

I develop VS on an old NV GF6200 and an NV GF9800, and a mix of old and new drivers, both run the game perfectly fine.

I've also tried in on a GF8xxx, with success.

Perhaps it has something to do with:
  • Windowed mode (try full screen - beware of full screen freezes that are hard to get out of)
  • Desktop composition (try turning off compiz or desktop effects)
  • Something entirely different.
  • EG: one of my computers started doing that, and it was a busted GPU (faulty VRAM)
Perhaps a capture of stdout/stderr could help, perhaps not.
