Application configuration is incorrect, game won't run

Technically this is with Privateer Gemini Gold, but I've gotten it with VS too, and I can't register on the PGG forums right now, so...

After installing Privateer/VS/etc., I install the Visual C++ runtime like I'm supposed to. It installs fine. But on running the game, I still get the dreaded "application configuration is incorrect" error, and it won't run.

The configuration files are fine. The Visual C++ runtime is definitely properly installed. What's going on?

You may have to play with the .manifest files (ie: rename, delete, something like that).

That's a file that sits right next to the executable file (has same name, but with .manifest extension).

I really don't know much about that windows abomination that the manifest is, ever since I started having distribution problems because of that I just stopped developing for windows.

Perhaps someone more knowledgable can give you more info.
