If you want to compile your own game i think the following howto will help (data for old..., data4.x for new grafics/ships)
http://www.joeredcloud.com/kandarwiki/i ... eCvsCygwin

If you just want to play download the latest file from here (old grafics/ships):
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/files/index.html
Stable Windows Release:
Vegastrike 0.3.9.1, High Detail Graphics 107 Megabytes

If you just want to compile it you need only sources.
But i assume you want to play it after compiling so you need the data (the big one) too because after compiling you only have the executable.

Here you can find the cvs-Repository.
'vegastrike' is the recent source
'data' is the old artwork (models/textures/...) BIG
'data4.x' is the new artwork BIG

But anyway if you just want to play I suggest you to download the already compiled file (including everything except sources) from the download page here (~100MB) It's big but worth it. 8)
Currently we don't have a smaller one (AFAIK).
