The game, Mount&Blade, is a great example of a first-person combat simulator with RPG characteristics. Therefore, I suggest that it might be used as a model for VS.
Here are my suggestions for some skills/stats (note that skills have one or more parent stats which determine the max-level one can attain in the skill--just like in M&B):
STATS
strength stat: can withstand more Gs or personal damage before succumbing.
intelligence stat: increases the rate at which one can improve skills, in general.
charisma stat:
agility stat:
SKILLS
weapon-accuracy skill (agility): increases the size of the hit-box surrounding a target.
hacking skill (intelligence): increases one's ability to break into docked ships or sabotage subsystems.
gambling skill (intelligence): reaps additional credits in bars.
diplomacy skill (charisma): increases influence with NPCs/factions.
leadership skill (charisma): increases influence with wingmen.
bartering skill (charisma, intelligence): increases profit margins when buying/selling.
