Leonidas
Right, so I was somewhere in Rlaan space when I saw this thing. I wasn't actually close enough for a visual, but I saw it in my little targeting area. It looked pretty friggin' big. It was an Aera capital vessel, sort of like a Vitik, but kind of rounded out in the middle. I checked on the wiki and it said it's the "Dreadnought of the current age" and that it's anew ship. Has anyone else ever seen one? Docked with one? Seen it in combat?

OMFG was it big?
Did it have flashy lights?
Was it blue?
Did eat smaller ships?
Ask yourself these questions before saying that it is a Arean Dreadnaught.
We all know Dreads are these things, except maybe the Blue part. Anyways, you got a screenie?

Yep, it's a dreadnought, and it's huge. It also has lots and lots of turrets. I would seriously not recommend going after one of those unless you're flying something with really, really heavy weapons, and have some capships and a wing of Goddards fighting for you. And some way to deal with those damn turrets, let's not forget.
(Not sure, but I think a Mule might be able to take one on as long as you avoid getting an anticap missile in the face, as the Leonidas and other Aera capships don't seem to have many seriously heavy guns. Mules IIRC can take capship-heavy guns, so maybe you could get behind a Leonidas and pound away with fusion cannons, and hope that your ECM works and the turrets aren't powerful enough to wear you down.)

Okay, any ship that can mount an icepick beam (available in Rlaan space, does damage equivalent to about one torpedo per second) should also be able to take out a Leonidas. I wouldn't expect it to be fast though.
(Icepick is a capship-heavy beam, so choices are a bit limited, and the range is only 4 km. Good luck.)

I hacked myself a Leonidas and tried to fly with it.... OMFG!! It takes one hour for sure to make a complete 360° turn. Definitively not a ship for human player, unless you are very very patient. Even if I could I would never buy it, and normally I love capships.
And since this ship isn't textured yet, it's also ugly. Nevertheless, it has huge amount of turrets, all sizes and styles. I didn't count them, but it took long to scroll through all those turrets in the upgrades list.
I guess it is the last step for a capship before being a death-star.

You could also hack to behave like a fighter, which i did with csv-editorOMFG!! It takes one hour for sure to make a complete 360° turn.
Enjoy the Tri p

Hacked Leonidas
*()Alf*
Hehehe!! After a while, I, too, became annoyed and hacked it so that it possesed the agility of a heavy fighter!
Then that was just rediculous, so I slowed it down a decent ammount, and now I can actually have fun piloting it.
*Xante*
M-m-m-meeeee n-n-n-neeeiiiither... *BRRRRRR!!!! SHIVER*
That will give me vegastrike nightmares...
Hehe I hacked myself a leonidas too. It really was not very much fun. It turns as slow as a planet, and the front guns are useless. Nothing with technology from the vegastrike age should turn that slowly. I must admit, I love the whiplash turrets though!!You could also hack to behave like a fighter, which i did with csv-editor

I found a better way to get into the taste of a Leonidas. I hacked its GrandGauss cannon into my Goddard. This is 'till now the most powerfull weapon I've ever seen, and only appears on the Leonidas. It deals 35.000 Mj at each shot (need good Reactors though) at 177 km distance
Fighters have now to swarm on me in groups to get a chance to shoot at me before dying, and I can take on capital vessels at a distance where they can't bother me.
Imagine 8 GrandGauss on a little cloaking Vendetta, that's allmost God-Mode

Have you tried the Pminus mk IV beams from a milspec tesla. I played around with those for a while you can mess things up (like fighter bases ) may be time for me to mess around with ship hacking a bit more. Last time, i hit too many zeroes on thrust and my telsa was 20 times faster than light fighters kinda hard to fly tho. This is 'till now the most powerfull weapon I've ever seen

Yeah I know the Pminus MK IV Beam: high energy output, but it's range is by far not 177 km. You have to be at quite a (dangerously) close range to use the full power of that weapon. The Gauss is a bolt weapon, so it hasn't such an energy loss on the long range. So in my opinion I would beat any ship equipped with Pminus, say the Gauss holds the top of the ranking to me.
You want to see the top of the hacked ships?
Vendetta w. Clydesdale milspec package, 8 GrandGauss Autotracking, 6 advTorpedo racks Autotracking with 100 ammo each, 50 of each shady upgrade (except turning, 20, otherwise it wouldn't be stearable), for the rest all the crème de la crème of the upgrades available and a cloaking device.
Went into aera space with it and detroyed a fleet of about 10 heavily escorted aera merchant marine Clydesdales and one aera Leonidas, about 60 ships in total, wich swarmed on me quasi simultaneously (aeras don't like me). Not one friendly ship anywhere. My ship landed securely on a planet there, with some little scars though.
But I will leave that ship in the hangar. Using it to much ingame is like continuously dancing on an ant-hill, killing everything without even taking notice of it. Was quite fun to try though.
The best thing you aquire while doing this kind of childish looking hacking is precious knowledge about the game engine. I think I'm ready to try to make my own ship. I got plenty of ideas so I'll try my skills on wings3D...

Once I found 17 (yes 17) Leonidas in a single system; I docked at a few of them and found a lot of upgrades and a bunch of cargo, none of it interesting.

Re: Leonidas
A good way to kill a Leonidas is entering at /home/username/.vegastrike-(version number)/serialized_xml/name of your saved game, open the file with the ship you're actually piloting and at one of the mounts put "capshipmisile". Enjoy
In universe self-describing one-liner which is pretty pathetic.

Re: Leonidas
How about just adding a Vigilance to your save game .. it comes with lots of capship missiles. . . and it has excellent speed and maneuverability for a capship. The Relativistic Particle Beam doesn't seem to be particularly effective against small fast vessels .. they look like they hit but no damage shows.

Re: Leonidas
Grand Gauss, nor the Capshipmissile is the strongest weapon. Try hacking yourself a beholder, use its uknownheavybeam. I am pretty sure you will like it, excellent range, I think about about 5 times as much damage as the capshipmissile (not sure, haven't checked), but it uses a giant amount of energy. You can destroy a Star Fortress is about 3 seconds with it, and it will practically obliterate any ship it touches. Not to mention, the beholder is extremely fast and has a overpowered turning rate, you can just spin around in circles and destroy anything that comes near you. Grand Gauss, nor the Capshipmissile can compete with it.
And besides, you said it yourself, the Grand Gauss is a bolt weapon. That makes it easy to dodge.
Vigilance is my favorite capship, by the way, because it is used by my favorite faction, the Purists.
