What do you all think of Freelancer?
I was just wondering, what do all you Vega Strike people think of Freelancer?
I've played both and I have to say I preffer Vega Strike. I thought freelancer was fun but didn't seem to place you at the controls of a spaceship. I thought it was just holding down fire and placing the mouse over a target. Also, it hasn't got the freedom of vega strike. Still it was quite playable for a while (although I only played the demo) and not bad.

Freelancer was like Diablo in space. Good for a bit of fun, but you can't compare it to Vegastrike. Freelancer is arcade, Vegastrike is more Simulation (or at least it's a hell of alot closer than Freelancer).
Freelancer had some good parts. The over-drive bit to fly to places faster was good, as was the jump gate system. It would make a reasonable on-line game, simply because there isn't much lost time flying nowhere.
If your after some arcade fun, Freelancer is good. If you want real space strategy and flying, Vega Strike wins hands down. Freelancer just isn't in the same league.

One of the recent updates at SomethingAwful.com mentioned Freelancer. Apparently the writer challenged people to send him a good game that he couldn't talk shit about. One of them was Freelancer.
Basil Fawlty takes a break from hotel management to wonder what could possibly be wrong with Freelancer.
1998, Chris Roberts Rumpus Room
"Hey guys, let's make a new Privateer game"
"Awesome Chris, but we can't, we don't have the rights!"
"That's okay, we'll change little details and give it a different name, but the fans will know!"
"Okay, like what details?"
"Oh, I don't know, like everything that made Privateer fun. Yeah, let's take all of that out. The dynamic economy, the setting, hiring escorts, the freedom to spend as long as you want just flying around and doing shit, a reason to get better and better ships. Hell, I'm so high from huffing paint thinner I think we should just go ahead and have people control their ship with a mouse!"
"YOU TRULY ARE A VISIONARY."

While Freelancer is more mature and has the nicer eye candy, I think Vega Strike has more potential. Larger galaxy, more equipment to choose from for updating your ship, and that's only what I've noticed so far.
Capships are more realistic in Vega Strike, with massive shields that are not easily breached by a piddly fighter.
I also disliked the mouse-only control in Freelancer. It works, but a joystick is better for this kind of game. The Freelancer promotion system plainly sucks: when I have the necessary money, I want to be able to buy the ships that are available.
In the long run, I expect Vega Strike to become the better game in every respect. Like Mozilla is better than IE these days

Ah well.
The thing I put before was before I tried the game. Now that I have tried it, I still think it is absolute rubbish. (a tiny little fighter can rip a capship to pieces)
One may fly with honour, or with a death wish. You're going to get yours.

Second post in this thread:
Meanwhile I've noticed that Freelancer is pretty modding-friendly, most of its configuration is in XML files and there are tools available for doing new models.
If you look at www.lancersreactor.com, you will find that some fans do amazing things with it. They might even fix most of the shortcomings in the original game.
