using a 'dns lookup' on a given link page would do the trick,

If > 20 links to the same host with out variation in subdomain/subfolder then 'hide' topic pending moderator 'activation'.

that owuld probably do the trick.. (would need a whitelist though.. i can picture many people giving links to the vegastrike.sourceforge.net in excess of 20..)

Nice idea snow_ Cat don't know if that would be possible with phpbb 2 but nice to keep in mind when we finally upgrade to version 3
