Favourite type of wood...

Post by dandandaman »

If you were suddenly turned into a piece of wood (and possible, as in Duality's case, turned back into humanoid form), what type of wood would you be and why?

Personally, I'd be a nice hardwood....probably jarrah (an Australian wood). It's strong, can look really nice, and is slightly resistant to white-ants :-)

Hickory is my preferred wood.

Gives good flavour to things you barbecue over it, and good for smoked salmon.

Hello

Eukaliptus,
In a big burning forest, they can explode, and even start like rockets. :P
I saw them exploding, and I'm a carpenter, my special profession is joiner,
I build furniture but also windows and doors, but no roof constructions.

Wow... I would certainly like to see that.
Me... I'm not sure which is my favorite wood, it's all wood to me.
But there's one with a certain smell I'm quite fond of, but the I can't identify it by name :(

Then you have to go in summer to south Portugal. There they plant a lot of Eukaliptus.
One year they had a place, where tey collected all the cutted wood directly in front of our house, we took only a little,
but we didn't had to look for wood the whole winter.Image

But if the forest realy burns, the people do it on purpose for the insurance,Image
this trees, if they are not too big can go up in the sky like a rocket at least 20 meters. They have a lot of aetheric oil.

But this is nothing against a burning camping place with a couple of 20-50 liter butan-gas bottles in the middle of the fire, they reach an altitude of 100 meters.Image

Oh we have Eucalyptus too. the oil has medical properties too. i have been thinking about the fact that some places use the oil to burn. like in lamps and the kind. i wonder if you could run model trains on it. Live Steam

purpleheart.. there are intricacies and depths. sometimes it can take a bit of time to see what the wood wishes to become.
Do you hear, that whisper, calling unto you
O'childe of the shore
As have your brethern before you
beckoning, to sail to those distant lands
Come
embrace me, your mistress
Upon the coldest sea

Balsa. Most likely to get covered in white, sticky substances, like wood glue, and also most likely to be used in experiments involving the Myth Busters.

Hello

Balsa was used in older times to build airplane models, because it has a very little weight.

What do you think about MDF (Medium-density fibreboard),
it is very heavy, has nearly nothing to do with wood, only that it's made out of wood, if you work with it, it makes a lot of dust.

But because it has no structure like wood has, it still has a lot of the good things from wood,
like isolation and so on, and it's perfect to build your own speakers for your stereo system.
The best wooden stuff to make speakers. 8)
Because of the missing of the structure, it is very good for reflecting all kind of waves,
and to don't start to go in resonance with any wave, especially the bass ones.

The only handicaps, MDF hates to go wet, and also to be beaten, you can make your signs with a fingernail on a plate of MDF, it is quit soft.
And if you paint it, you have to paint it from both sides,
if not because of the symmetry of the plate, it arches, twists itself.
