Introduction: Thus the Shadows take Form

Post by ShadowOblivion »

I shall be made known to you as ShadowOblivion, one and the same as ShadowOblivion(Oblivion) on Sauerbraten. Although my appearance is only now made apparent, I have been playing Vega Strike since the 0.4.3 release. I have to say this project is respectable and interesting, and definitely has potential. I intend to offer my meager resources, currently just ideas, to aid this project.

Greetings, loki. I've read quite a few of your posts. You seem to be very prevalent here. Do you play Sauerbraten? Does anyone else, who happens upon this thread? It's an open source first-person shooter that's quite good. >: D

Don't have Sauerbraten installed ATM make do with Nexuiz,AlienArena and OpenArena Linux side and ut2k4 windows side and i have heard good things about the current Sauerbraten version so maybe time to give it another go 8) as for my being prevalent i have been around for awhile and do know the code base well enough to be user support and bug triage guy :wink: though i haven't written any serious code in over 20 years.

Enjoy the Choice :)

Welcome ShadowOblivion! As loki said, I've played alien arena linux side and all Unreal series windows side (UT2k4 with wine too :twisted: )
might try Sauerbraten after I format my damn noisy box (currently formatting my pentium III, 128MB RAM box too), and trying to lower the noise output that my current box does. :x

Ah, I see, gentlemen. I tend not to play many commercial games(I've played Quake 1-3?, Halo 1-2(ship ideas? harhar. anyway, I thought the storyline was interesting), and some RPG's and RTS's), but I can see we have similar tastes. Nonetheless I hoped to find someone who may have already been familiar with me, but no matter. I also tend to like science-fiction in space, and there was a free(like Vega Strike) movie made recently called Star Wreck, a parody of Star Trek and Babylon 5. I think you may enjoy it. :twisted:

Here's a link to the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R79JuYdG ... re=related
Here's all the space action without the plot(as a music video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aij02fmktHk
Homepage(a version of the film is available for download): http://www.starwreck.com/
(the second link is supposed to play smoothly, I'm not sure why it's jumpy, it could be just my machine)

Anyway, I've been looking around these forums, and I saw several mentions of voice-acting for Vega Strike, I think I may be able to voice/create/add some content (particularly for the ISO faction), so if I can get any pointers on who to contact for direction and collaboration, that would be great. Also, is there a need for screen shots of VS, or propaganda to garner a greater fan base? I would consider making some Luddite and ISO tracts for the ignorant masses. :twisted:

I actually have voice acted for the ISO faction, but haven't uploaded it yet :oops:. You can try, though, and see which fits best :P . For voice acting, you might wanna check this page on a tutorial for best results in VS voice acting. You don't need to address to anybody in particular, just check the communications folder and check the faction's .xlm, and record all the lines for the xml.

We could always use artwork. Just post them in the artwork subforum in the appropriate thread or make your own.

Greetings, MC707! Thanks for the tutorial, and I think I have a portion of this setup already prepared. Like you, I am able to speak Russian(albeit at a lower level). for ze ISO! I'll have some time in a day to try something. I don't think you'd want me to make artwork though, I'm challenged when it comes to drawing >: /.

Oh no no no my friend! I do not speak Russian xD (however my mother does (or did :? )). ISO speak english, still. Anyway, you can check this page for factions which do not currently have voice acting (scroll down to the half down of the page).

Well now have Sauerbraten on both sides of the divide :D both Win7rc1 and f10 much prefer the f10 install much faster and the game play reminds me of Nexuiz with it's frenetic pace :lol: now to get used to the weapons 8)

@MC7077:
Ah, that's too bad. You don't speak, but can't you write?
ISO speak English? With what sort of accents(varied, I hope?)? I guess I'm feeding the stereotype that socialists are all Russian speakers. Ah, the irony. Thanks for the pointer to that page, I can see there's still quite a bit to be done. Is there a sort of concerted effort to accomplish this(with a hierarchy)(I'll take a closer look at that page in a moment), or do the developers just integrate whatever is uploaded? Would you recommend any particular microphone models? Mine is of low-quality.

@loki1950:
Nice! Are you going to play multiplayer? What handle do you plan to use? I usually stick to the regen/insta capture and insta protect servers, and I think I'll be on tonight. See you there, maybe. What's Win7rc1 and f10?

Also, what would the two of you gentlemen think if I were to create some web pages on popular networking sites to increase the public interest in Vega Strike?

What's Win7rc1 and f10?
Windows 7 release candidate 1 and fedora 10 the two OS's i currently use as i said much prefer fedora as it is not as resource hungry but that is changing as both Gnome and KDE(Desktop Environments) start to mature adding more abstraction layers in their efforts to attract windows refugees dumbing things down in the process but that's ok as now you don't have to be a full blown geek to run Linux now 8)

There's a whole pyramid of hierarchy! Meaning, whoever wants can post their contribution in the Music and Sound Collaboration section, then, after some eventual peer review, "the committer formerly known as pyramid" :mrgreen: has committed what was considered good to go. It's that simple, feel free to contribute :D
ShadowOblivion wrote:Would you recommend any particular microphone models? Mine is of low-quality.
My cheaper than cheap 2€ headset mic has proven itself enough for voice recording that is heard via radio; the post processing filters we apply for radio effect actually worsen the quality, and the result is still understandable.

The factions marked as done are already in SVN, but if you don't want to take the whole burden yet, you'll find contribution links in the posts of that section, so you can hear what's been done so far. As a bonus, you'll even find the Shapers, they are just 4 recordings away from getting committed :mrgreen:

Sauer... I like it but for some unknown reason it has never got me as much as the original Cube did...

@CLoneWolf:
Alright, thanks for the tip and for answering my question, CLoneWolf. I'll give it a try. Is the peer review just the opinions of other users? So there isn't any one person or group that judges the material, but the whole VS community? And what do you think about what I mentioned in my previous post,

Hello

All this confuses me a little bit.
I don't like to eat Sauerbraten, it is the German equivalent to Scottish, or is it Irish haggis,
not really, but the taste of it. :shock:
To tell the truth, it has nothing to do with haggis,
it is cow meat left around four weeks in vinegar in a cold, dark room, no fridge.
Then it turns grey.

But is it really a game?
And if yes, then post please a link to that game. :?

ShadowOblivion wrote:Is the peer review just the opinions of other users? So there isn't any one person or group that judges the material, but the whole VS community?
Yes, or it wouldn't be "peer" :) Let alone JackS, Minister of Information about VegaStrike who traces the canon path, anyone is welcome to contribute any kind of content that can fit somewhere, like it's happening for 3d models, landscapes, cargo pictures, voices and music; just as anyone can give feedback and constructive criticism on any contribution.
Of course, the last step requires assistance by an official team member who can commit to the SVN.

I said "peer review" to quote Turbo who recently used that expression as a step before wikifying proposed content for radio channels, but to be honest sometimes we get very little feedback by normal users like you and me, despite our invites to provide it; a musical piece I proposed, at some point, had only 3 answers but almost 100 views, I guess we're a bunch of natural born shy lurkers :mrgreen:
ShadowOblivion wrote:And what do you think about what I mentioned in my previous post, "Also, what would the two of you gentlemen think if I were to create some web pages on popular networking sites to increase the public interest in Vega Strike?"
Well, it depends on what the actual Dev Team thinks about it; I for myself wouldn't know ("I'm just a Privateer" ;) ) as, recalling a similar topic from another game, its devs were intentionally avoiding too much advertisement because they considered the game still far from finished and wouldn't want people to feel let down by what was there and backfire with negative criticism. Not knowing the official VS Team position about the issue, I'll let them answer :)

Well, as you might well know, Latin America (my home) is currently changing tremendously to socialism. Much, much more than russia is now. Let me recall... Venezuela as the leader of socialists, then Bolivia, then Ecuador (my home), El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Honduras, (communist) Cuba, and the Beat Goes On...

So all in all I should talk spanish :shock: :lol:
Now really, for my recordings I used the tone these countries' leaders use.

I haven't eaten any (der)Sauerbraten, but I'd sure like to give it a try some day! The Sauerbraten I was referring to is the result of an ongoing open-source? project(Cube) similar to VS, except the game is a fast-paced First Person Shooter(Sauerbraten is Cube 2). If I'm not marauding in the VS universe, then I'm fragging ogros on the Sauerbraten servers >:D. :twisted:

For some reason I just love that statement. Maybe it has something to do with the of the word "ogros" in an English sentence. God I just love that word :twisted:
