Finally a new box
Well i finally will be picking it up tomorrow so will be having a bit of an install fest for the next wee while too get back to a dev environment on both sides of the OS divide.
Specs:Intel Q8200/Asus P5QDLX/2G RAM/2 500G HD/9800GT 512M all wrapped in an Antec 300 case.
So i will be able to play the latest svn on windows again after building some binaries for it.
Enjoy the Choice

Re: Finally a new box
Wow--I can't believe my box is already obsolete. Your setup is pretty similar to mine, except with newer versions of everything.
Also, are those two hard drives going to be in a RAID configuration? What brand are they?

Re: Finally a new box
Yikes--those ST3500320AS are the exact ones that I've heard bad stories about.
If the drives don't come with SD1A firmware installed, make sure to get the firmware update here:
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/s ... cId=207951
(you need unplug all but the drive you are updating when you use it)
I got a pair of Seagate 1TBs but a slightly older version that I haven't heard as many bad stories about, but I updated the firmware just in case.

Re: Finally a new box
EXACTLY what I thought of doing! Still, the fact that it is the only Mini series with 2GB RAM capability IS something, as well as the fact that it has a Linux distro in it . Thus, for its size, the 80 Gigs HD is quite nice... Do you recommend me that lappy, though?loki1950 wrote:Ah one of the net books most dump the distro that is pre-installed for one that they like most of the large distros offer a net book respin now.

As with any purchase "let the buyer beware" google it for problems and reviews and look out for reviewers that don't know Linux and downgrade there experience accordingly

Re: Finally a new box
I see. Though I don't understand why would I look for ppl who don't know Linux, if they are probably gonna review badly? Also, I am probably gonna change the Linux distro that comes with it, cuz I think its a little bit too basic. But thanks for the advice. Oh and now that I remember, I think that laptop I showed you is going to have a new version this June, so...loki1950 wrote:As with any purchase "let the buyer beware" google it for problems and reviews and look out for reviewers that don't know Linux and downgrade there experience accordingly

Re: Finally a new box
Well just got a call from the dealer it seems that an expected shipment did not arrive that had my intended video card so a wait till monday In the mean time i have to figure out how to get fedora 10's NetworkManager to use a pppoe connection. It's some kind of permission issue as SELinux is raising an objection.

Re: Finally a new box
If you're getting a wireless router, I highly recommend a router that supports linux firmware (OpenWRT or DD-WRT) They work really well as cheap, low-power linux computers. It's really nice to be able to ssh home and remotely Wake-on-LAN your desktop machine. Not to mention having something that can run cron jobs at all times of the night/day even when your computer is off

No wi-fi got a Linksys BEFSR41 v4 a four port one at the Staples next door don't know if it supports opwnWRT but it does support a lot as is Installing KDE and friends ATM.
Any ideas on how to partition the new drive i want both 32 and 64 bit installs and maybe room for a few test installs though the biggest will be /home about 400 of the 500 Gb.

Re: Finally a new box
Update got HD sound working through alsa and pulse Put "the Return of the King" into the dvd drive and fiddled with the alsamixer Asus do provide a tarbal of the alsa source and libs but there are a bit dated version 1.0.16 while fedora has -1.0.19-2. which means that it's been supported for awhile also have Jack running ok so may be time to set up for voice recording and post-production.
