Probes, mines, and other small stuff

Post by travists »

Phenoxstorm wanted a model for a probe and some others thought my small scale stuf was ok, so here is a tangent fro some of the other small stuff.

I have a couple of ideas for both implacements and mines. The implacement would be a fancy turret, but mines..... conventional/anti-matter, ship tracking/static, proximity/contact

This is kinda off topic. Should I start a new thread?
So, how should mines work?

We would have a few kinds of mines:
  • Stationary bombs - useful for EMP, SPEC inhibitors, stuff like that. They'd explode when a target gets near enough.
  • Tracking mines - they have limited flight capabilities to stealthily track and interdict vessels that come into range. And they blow up.
  • Gun mines - they have an overpowered weapon mount, they'd aim and shoot, hoping to inflict maximum damage before the target retaliates and blows the mine. Farther range than tracking mines, but more vulnerable too.
  • Missile mines - they have one or a few single-shot missile mounts, like gun mines, but harder to detect (missiles make it harder to pinpoint the origin). They could have a small payload too, so when they run out of ammo, they ram the target and blow their payload.
  • Hybrid mines - they mix the above techniques. Ie: a gun mine that has an EMP payload, depleteing a target's shields before unleashing a devastating barrage, quickly and giving little advance warning. And stuff like that.
Those are mines - IE: disposable weapon emplacements.

Fixed weapon emplacements would bolster heavier, longer-lived weapons (multi-shot, reloadable ammo), heavy shielding, limited to no movement capabilities, and be bigger.

Very low poly 1466 poly, 1686 vert. But, if there are going to hundreds or thousands of these things visable, that may be a plus. It also fits with my thinking on them.

Hmm, I cannot see your preview render for some reason.

I think they automatically need movement capability, to counter weapon recoil knocking them out of position. So rear facing thrusters would be important.

For the same reason, platform orientation control would also be important, even if the actual weapon systems were on turrets for independent training. However this could be accomplished via an internal gyroscope (rotation counterweight), which would not necessarily be visible directly in the model (but could be), or by RCS thrusters which would be visible.

Try Here.

Also working on the cannon for gun turrets and emplacements. Don't think my sign would be on the outside though

There is a thread somewhere that goes over the various mines and orbital emplacements. Orbital gun batteries should be modeled more like the ships are since they will have various hardpoints for weapons. Best way to dexcribe them is the sentry guns you spot around jump gates or stations in EVE.

I'll work on the guns then. The other option is a turret with a thruster on the back, but that does not, to my mind, have as much of an emplacement vibe to it.

I don't mean to run this down, I think it's great that something's being produced, but I find it hard to take those guns seriously. Mainly because of the coil thing around the barrel - I'm just reminded of those retro laser toys that 'pew pew'. They just don't feel very threatening when they look like they've come from Captain Scarlet.

I'd say redraft some gun designs and then re-model. Others might disagree with my however.

Ya, it does have a funny feeling, but it also makes a lot of sense.

Big overpowered guns need big radiators very close to heat sources. I think the funny feeling may be gone if the thing is textured appropriately. Anyway, with the heat sink idea, you could replace the coils with more heat sink-ish stuff?

Long barrel with fins? From what I've seen, the current turrets use just boxes. I want something a bit more flashy for a cannon housing. A missile battery might be easier. Guns aside, is the overall design worth continuing on?

Ya, I believe so.

At least from an engineering POV, the thing looks sound. Just make it look less toyish ;)

travis, dont forget that you have access to the developer tools svn and can upload work there if need be. Also, if I ever get the actual site up and designed you will be able to host images from there as my AV is ;) Haven't seen must activity from ya lately though so hope real life hasnt consumed you.

Real life, other intrests... I recently downloaded the latest SVN and discovered somthing about cloaking I do pop in from time to time, perhaps I'll get back at some moddeling or maybe enough intrests to finish off that base maker.
