Hmm, could it be broken into a functionality part and an interface part, with the interface work put off to 0.5.4?

You could make it a config option whether the game should treat the player fleet as escorts or stored equipment. That would circumvent the dependence on interface work but still allow testing and balancing to begin.

Or perhaps a simpler interface for 0.5.3. You can currently buy your own ships, that means switching between them. We could have an extra button for launching, and one for grounding. That'd be easy I think.

The interface with showing them on the landing pad would be great, but it's a lot more work.

Cool, that would be more than adequate. In fact, that's the entire feature request.

Yeah and that's just aesthetics; it is of secondary importance to gameplay enhancing features.
