Friend or foe??

Ok i downloaded this game 2 or more years ago then the computer memory was wiped (i've got it again now on my new laptop) anyway when i was a completly my player 2 years back i found you could stop anyone attacking you by furiously tapping the 1 key to sending out loads of friendly responses. This really came in handy when i'd only been playing for 2 days and one of my stray dumbfires hit a mule in a merchant mule convoy.
And the game doesn't even allow you to bribe officials.
