Auto turrents. How do they work?

Post by Stomp357 »

How do you engage auto-turrents? If I jump to the turrent, and press CTRL-T, then CTRL-W, the turrent will attack while I'm in the turrent position, but I'm being attacked from front then. When I jump back to cockpit, I get attacked from rear, and turrent quits firing. Can the turrent attack while I'm in cockpit? If so, how do engage it to do so?

While in the cockpit, press ctrl-t. That will cause your turrets to fire at your current target. They will continue firing at that target even if you switch targets.

CTRL-W is for "weapons free" mode, which means that the turrets will choose their own targets, usually deciding to aim at the one within gun range that is closest to its current line of sight. This is handy for keeping enemies from getting on your tail when you are surrounded by three or more foes, but often you will want to bring all of your guns to bear on a single target for a quick kill, in which case CTRL-T for "attack my target" is the better choice.

I've become quite fond of particle gun turrets. Gothri's will often ignore even the dual fire of tachyon/meson guns but will shy away from a hail of particle projectiles.

Unlike the turrets with heavier guns, particle turrets will sustain a high rate of fire while still packing a sting.

My Galaxy has one, with a tachyon turret and hull mounted Ion guns it has become quite a terror of the spaceways and a nearly perfect escort for slow, vulnerable Draymans.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I haven't really taken the time to determine which turrets I like best, I always went with tachyon (as I like those on front). I'll try out the Particles now.

Turruts are useless junk desingned to use your money up. they can't even hit a staionary target. if they could hit something (other than me) i would bother with them.

I've destroyed plenty of targets with turrets. If AI turrets can hit you, think about what they are doing differently. If you are twisting about and constantly turning, your turrets won't have a lot of luck.

They are great when running away ( :D ) mostly, at least rear turrets are. In such cases, they don't even have to destroy your pursuer, just damage him enough to get him to back off.

Top and bottom turrets on the Galaxy on the other hand.. lot of firepower there, that can all be directed forward. With your forward guns, it can create quite a barrage.

If an enemy is heading straight at you for long enough for him to get in more than a couple of shots, then he is getting pounded by your turrets. The turret AI does not do very well on high-deflection shots, but if the enemy is coming straight at you from any angle inside the turret's firing cone, it can hit him. I tend to get nearly half of my kills with turret aid in a Galaxy.

Each turret carries it's own energy supply. The more turrets the ship is capable of carrying the more firepower it has over and above what it's own engine can power.

The Galaxy has more firepower than the Centurion because of this, also because it's turrets can fire in a 360 degree arc. If the turrets could have AT, this ship would definitely be overpowered and unbalancing to the game.
