This is probably something that should be fixed (aka bug).
3 easy steps for achieving time travel and in-system jumps:
1. pursue a ship that is some distance away and follow it using the auto pilot (you need to get behind that ship)
2. as you get control of your ship again some distance away from the ship, fire some shots of your guns at it
3. immediately activate the autopilot and watch:
when in auto pilot you see you ship from the outside and these shots that were just fired are coming from BEHIND your ship and will fly past you,
as you will be back in the cockpit you will AGAIN see those shots flying past you coming from behind you
I think this is a result of the outside view (during auto pilot) showing the destination and simulation for all actions which take place during the time of the auto pilot fly are not calculated completely. At least the propagation of gun shots is not simulated during that time.
