Help with New_Game and save files

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

Help with New_Game and save files

Post by compressed_fear »

I have vegastrike 5.0, and it won't let me create a new game. There is a save file called New_Game in the game, but I can't save over it or anything. I also can't find out where the save files are in the vegastrike directory. I've read through the forums trying to see if anyone else brought it up and tried the suggestions gave to them but none of them worked (I do have Vista). I even tried adding a save folder to .vegastrike directory, but it didn't do anything. I'd really like to get this problem fixed so I can play the game. I've also tried uninstalling it, but all my saves are still there when i reinstall it even though I checked the box in the uninstall that said remove all save files, or something like that. I will greatly appreciate any help I can get, thanks!

Welcome compressed_fear where are you looking for the save file it will not be with the executables but in your user\app data\vegastike or something similar i don't run Vista so can not verify this just a another wrinkle that vista throws but almost like Linux it separates user data form system/program files this allows Vista to be a proper multi-user platform. You might try a Find vegastrike.config there will most likely be two instances of it one with the program files and an other with the saves and five other folders but to create a save file that has to be done in-game  go to and base computer terminal at there is a Save/load button click it.On the new screen at the bottom is a text input area that is where you type in a name for your save, them click the save button now when you look at .veagastrike there will be a save folder it is not created until there something to put in it  Hope this makes some scene if not just post and give me hell for making the wrong assumptions 8)

Enjoy the Choice :)

Seeing as we're kinda on the subject, I would also like to point out that I once tried to create a new pilot, except that it prompted a dialog box to load a current pilot file instead. Is this a bug, or did the ability to create a new pilot file had not been implemented yet?

Just load a new game from the ingame screen and give it a different name for saving with the text input pane at the bottom of the save game screen. Then at the main menu you can choose between them. And the saves will go into the .vegastrike-0.5 folder it's a hidden folder on OSX same as under Linux can i assume you know how to get access to them  if not ace123 did post about how to get to them.

Hi micheal as i said earlier vista no longer allows apps to save things anywhere but it will be some place in your user files most likely username\apps\data\vegastrike\.vegastrike\ not anywhere near the the game files in \Program files it should be the same in Win 7 so i will check the proper path later in the copy of it i have running in Virtual Box.

yeah, that's the thing. Vista says there is nothing else were and will not let me into Documents & Settings which is likely were it will be.

Also anything in that folder does not come up on searches.

I so want XP back.

Then you may have to use the administrator privileges can't run Virtual box right now have to compile a new kernel module for it as i just updated to a new kernel.BTW there are a few other threads about vista saves on the forum they nay have further info.
Edit:Posting this from Win7  and from what i can see documents and settings is indeed locked to normal user usaage
