Keyboard Layout & Key artwork

Need help testing contributed art or code or having trouble getting your newest additions into game compatible format? Confused by changes to data formats? Reading through source and wondering what the developers were thinking when they wrote something? Need "how-to" style guidance for messing with VS internals? This is probably the right forum.

Keyboard Layout & Key artwork

Post by pontiac »

I started this little poject of mine some time ago and i finally had some time to> make it public.

What i did? I started using GIMP to make some single grafic for each keyboard-key to be used in the wiki and manual.

Just have a look to see what i mean
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/phpwi ... rtwork-WIP

Source files (GIMP xcf and Wings3D) are available there too.

The lower picture (whole keyboard as one file) for the German and US keyboard are taken from the GNOME keyboard configuration applet which has an extensive collection of keyboard layouts and keyboards.

Thanks :)

But there are a few quirks left (funny looking keys like the backspace key) and some missing keys (e.g Numpad).

I would greatly appreciate if sb could look into the US layout to spot errors, since i have no _real_ US keaboard here to confirm all details.

Ok, German and US Layout seems to be complete now:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/phpwi ... rtwork-WIP
The single layouts (without using the Wiki) are here
Keyboard_Layout_German.html
Keyboard_Layout_US.html

If you spot any error/quirk please say it there.

Also if you want to make keyboard-layouts for different languages there is a directory with the source files in GIMP (.xcf) format:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/users ... ce_images/

Complete Overviev of the data for this little project of mine:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/users ... /keyboard/

Ok, here's the WIP of the US layout overview (the only one ingame)
VsManualKeyboardLayoutUs

EDIT: Ok, it's no WIP anymore, it's more or less finished... the only thing remaining is a check by s/b with a US keyboard, if all of the keys are really mapped right

On american keyboards, the shift key looks like [^ Shift] (with text, not just an arrow). Also, the one above it (downward arrow on yours) says [Caps Lock] with no arrow at all. The +/= key has the + sign on top.

Oh, and the keys on the right of f12 read [Print Scrn/Sys Rq] [Scroll Lock] [Pause/Break] where / represents a horizontal line, with term one on top and term two on the bottom.

Many many thanks for the feedback :)

I'll add these changes to the US layout as soon as possible.

One question left: Is true that the following keys have swapped (top/bottom) symbols on it:

When i use the US layout on my keyboard i'll get square brackes without SHIFT on both, not swapped.

Ok, so pressing the keys gives the same output as i get ;)

And the labels are really as pictured above? (one time is the square-bracket on the top and one time it's the curly-bracket)?
