Tactics forum?

Post by Nevita »

I've seen at a few discussions turn into discussions about the tactics people use while playing the game. Why don't we establish a Tactics forum where new players can go to learn how to play the game well, and where expert players can trade tricks?

I know that a lot of this is done in help already, but I would think that the help section should be reserved mostly for helping people to get the game running.

What do people think?

Cool idea! You got my vote for it.

That is indeed a good idea...

Since I would say there is at least some interest, who should I contact/pester about getting this done?

Why a tactics forum... but no feature request forum?

perfect;) I will try to find the other topics and do the same.
Just a question, if I move a topic, is there a way to delete the topic named "moved: bla bla..."

Well yeah. But it just seems that those two things are different enough to warrant separate forums. Apologies for not lodging my complaint when the change was actually made. : P

ok so I have some tactics to ask about

the AI scripts...what do you guys think

Especially those of you playing with the latest data

part of me wants to revamp them and give different factions different AI scripts...which is eminantly testable by editing ai/events/ directory
and adding subdirectories for each faction with variants of the .xml files for thos factions (will check that dir first)

I think there could be a lot more community tweaking of those event scripts--since they're basically just lookup tables of distance->list of strategies to employ :-)

looking forward to comment

I played a bit with the latest data, but its hard to judge the AI because they just jump around a lot... its like matrix in space, its pretty hard to judge any other aspect of the AI.

Anyway, if I were to be writing some new AI stuff I would probably work on pathfinding and a basic docking sript, but thats just me.

I think there's a new config variable

section AI
max_allowable_travel_time
which is set to 15 seconds by default

section AI
too_close_for_warp_tactic
13000

you can try tweaking those ;_)
just thru the config file

maybe you have an old binary
committed a new windows one

I think that the ai is pretty decent as is :-), but making it easy to tweak would of course be even better :-D

I've never found any real problem with the A.I except for the tendency for opponents to favor the sweep attack & repeat a little .
