WCU 0.2.x - bug reports

Post by zbyszanna »

I propose to make a sticky thread concerning bugs in current version. Let's say make this thread sticky. People who find bugs in game will post their posts here, so it will be easy to see what needs to be fixed. When someone fixes this bug, he/she should mark it as fixed (don't know if it is possible). I start with problems I just encountered.

Inconsistences in buy menu:
- reapir system (thing) is in repair system branch, but "repair ai [advanced]" is in repair systemS/advance branch.
- turrets are listed under mounted guns branch

Cargo and hangar space:
- owned frigate with two daemons and had 0.800003/201 cargo and hangar hold taken.

Missing pictures:
some garrisons have no pictures at all, for example carrier garrison and venture garrison.

More bugs.

Buying upgrades: If I sell an old upgrade, then suddenly my upgrade slots go into the negatives. Ex: -6/1 So I have to sell 6 items, and then I only have one upgrade slot, like a decommissioned fighter. And this happened in my ships that were stock.

Freeze time. Whenever enemy ships show up, the game will stop doing anything for several minutes. Its similar to the bug in the last version where jumping took forever.

Some other bug stuff.

But first, I never really played WCU befor, so a lot of stuff that seems like a bug to me is just because it is different to the Remake.

-Autotracking doesn't work (I tried to activate it with k, but nothing)

-Loading times are the hell... jumps, enemies not loaded befor, sometimes even when autopiloting...

-everytime i save and reload my ship is completely stripped
You are a newbie and need help? Check out the Wing Commander Universe and Privateer Remake Library Project

Plenty plenty of bugs :(

Unfortunely, fixing them is a bit out of my league right now. I can only do general stuff.

I haven't really tried out the game since I got my ship to load, life happens and so on.

BUT, My ships stripped out like that and I found that there were carridge returns in the save file for the game. Soft returns and hard returns.

Word will add stuff so do NOT use that.

WordPad works well, but you have to guess at the hidden characters.

You'll find the problem up in the area where your ships are listed.

Good luck with it.

Regarding the negative upgrade volume: it seems that many of the shipname.template values for Upgrade_Storage_Volume in units.csv are too low once all the items in Upgrades are added. Privateer Remake 1.2 didn't have this problem because the available small ships had Upgrade_Storage_Volume no smaller than 12, and larger ships had 16384. The main drawback with larger upgrade storage volumes is that they can spawn enormous amounts of cargo when ships are destroyed, thereby causing slowdowns.

The autotracking upgrade can be worked around by changing "{MOUNT_UPGRADE;;;autotracking;;;;;;;;;;;;1;1}" in the line "autotracking__upgrades" in units.csv into "{GUN_MOUNT_UPGRADE;;;autotracking;;;;;;;;;;;;1;1}". However, discussions in the Privateer Remake forums indicate gameplay might be changed in future releases to enable players to win without autotracking, allowing the feature to be discarded.

I think, looking at my units.csv that not all the ships are supposed to be so very custtomisable.

Most of the decommissioned vessels work fine without fancy upgrades, so what you see is what you get. You can add one or maybe two things and that's all.

Some ships have a lowered number, but they are already outfitted with basics. Others have lower numbers so you don't do certain things to the ships making them unplayable or making them too unfair. You can have either THIS or THAT, but not both.

Make your choice.

Why the numbers roll in negatives...
I noticed negative numbers when I hacked a ship beyond what it was supposed to have. I'll have to see if that's the only time I get into the negatives.

Don't answer this in this thread. It's just to make you think. Create a new one, or revive the one with the autotracking discussion.

Without autotracking I think you're going to make the game un-winable, except for the very best pilots, of which I am not one. That or that you will make the game too easy to win.

I have already noticed overly squirrelly behaviour from standard ships in someone's attempt to make the gaming better. Granted, some of the ships are not supposed to be flown by humans. I believe that autotracking should be a take it or leave it.

The watusi defeats it.

Tractor beams NEED IT if you're going to do rescue missions.

I don't know, I always thought that the shipname.template entries in units.csv defined what upgrades and limits are placed on the ship, especially when they are repaired after being damaged. All I noticed was that the negative upgrade size problem goes away once the values are increased.

Another workaround for autotracking (if one prefers to leave the units.csv as is):
Copy the entry in "weapon_list.xml" for

<Bolt name="GUN_MOUNT_UPGRADE" mountsize="Light">
<Energy rate="1" refire="1">
</Energy>
<Damage rate="1" longrange="1">
</Damage>
<Distance speed="1" radialspeed="1" radius="1" length="1" pulsespeed="1" range="1" >
</Distance>
<Appearance file="weapons/neutrongun.png" r="1" g="1" b="1" a="1" >
</Appearance>
</Bolt>

and paste it as a new entry:

<Bolt name="MOUNT_UPGRADE" mountsize="Light">
<Energy rate="1" refire="1">
</Energy>
<Damage rate="1" longrange="1">
</Damage>
<Distance speed="1" radialspeed="1" radius="1" length="1" pulsespeed="1" range="1" >
</Distance>
<Appearance file="weapons/neutrongun.png" r="1" g="1" b="1" a="1" >
</Appearance>
</Bolt>

Some ships arent supposed to be costumisable.

Talons come to my mind. You buy it, and have 1 upgrade space which most likely goes to a jump drive and thats it.

That's a good example. The entry for talon.decommissioned in units.csv as of patch 16 (wcu alpha 0.2) indicates that it carries as sellable Cargo the upgrades: tungsten_hull, shield_4_Level2, reactor_Level2, tungsten, hunter_aw_6i, afterburner. When these upgrades are sold or repaired after being damaged, the upgrade size can go into negative values because the talon.template indicates that all talons have space for only one in Upgrade_Storage_Volume (the Upgrades column tells another story: talon.decommissioned is only supposed to effectively have shield_4_Level1, reactor_level_2, and afterburner_milspec).

Near as I can tell, the Talon comes with a jump drive. So does a Gladius. And probably most military and militia ships that become available later. A decommisioned ship is, I think, a complete craft, with no need for upgrades at all, except for changing guns and missles. I just bet that if its upgrade slot was 0/0 there would have been problems.

As buggy as my game has been though, I have yet to get my ship stripped, unless I run reset_universe.bat, which is supposed to reset your ship.

If upgrade space is 0/0 you can't add guns or missiles.

I haven't seen mention of the bug I have. WCU is completely unplayable on my computer in this version. (it's a win xp, SP2) I had it working fine before I tried to install all the updates. (I had the august 17th version, i think with the first couple of updates after august 17th installed).

But the fully updated (as of a week ago anyway) version would immediately exit to windows whenever I tried to autopilot. It was amazing how quick the game would quit-I wished it would do that in PR when i WANTED to quit.

Positive observations first:

A) The second cursor has not appeared when landed at all.

B) Turrets on the Galaxy rotate all the time and at a constant speed.
In Remake the turrets don't rotate sometimes when on auto and also rotate intemittently at various speeds

A few problems I've encountered with the latest build:

1) WCU takes 20 to 30 minutes to load now. Remake takes less than 90 seconds to load.

2) No Sound at all.

3) Erratic Mouse response when flying.
Mouse behaves correctly when landed at a station.
When flying the mouse reponse varies from NONE to delayed then slow with mouse having to be moved 10cm to achieve a small response.
Then several seconds later the movement is better, before pausing or stuttering again.

4) Game loads with top down image of Galaxy and an on-screen message stating: "No Rooms"

5) Player can't enter upper or lower turret on Galaxy.

6) White text on cockpit monitors and on HUD speed settings.

7) SET and KPS are green but aren't fully shown on the HUD.
Parts of each letter are missing or disappear randomly.

8) Delay when jumping varies from 1 to 5 minutes.
In Remake the delay to the start of the jump sequence varies from None to a few seconds maximum.

9) Game is not recognising the screen size set up.
I've set the screen to 1024 x 768 yet it defaults back to 320.
Allocated 1024 MB of free RAM to the game.

10) Movable target reticle or dot is missing. There is no indication at all on screen of where the cursor or mouse is when flying when using the mouse.
The centre dot of the target reticle (the front dot on the target sight) moves in Remake according to the player's ship movements when using the mouse or keys. This, associated with the faulty mouse response, makes combat a suicidal affair in the Galaxy.

Hi Spirit,

I hope things are getting better for you.
Wishing you all the very best.

I should have mentioned that I'm running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a
Dual Processor 1.0 GHz G4 PowerMac 2 x 1000MHz
BTO Ultra SCSI 2 x 80 GB HD
2 x 250 Ultra ATA HD
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 128MB
1792 MB DDR 2700 SDRAM
An old machine now, but it runs Remake and Privateer well.

Consistently crashes to the desktop just before the loading finishes using WCU 0.2.17

Loading is much faster but crashes at the end consistently.

I've restarted the computer 3 times after cleaning out the old Preferences and it crashes to the desktop each time.

No other applications are running and there is 1.47 GB of free RAM.

10.3.9 has all recent updates applied.

My Moral Code:
- The only sin is to treat people as if they were things.
- Rules were made for people, not the other way around.
- Don't deceive. Real life is complicated enough.
- If all else fails, smash stuff.
