Cockpits on/off

Post by DNGhunter »

Hi people, i'm new on this forum but I play VS since a lot. I have a question and i didn't find any solution in previous topics: it's possible to turn cockpits on for every ship? i'm not really interested to cool 3d cockpits, the 2d form privater gold are good enough for me

It's just a variable in the config file but the main problem is that there are only two or three cockpits done not even one for the llama :( so there is really no real reason to turn them on ATM but if you want to try cobbling some together I think we can help you, have fun.

hi thx for replying
do you mean two or three cockpits in addition to the aera's and the rlaan's ones? Usually i fly with Vendetta or with Goddard milspec.
if it's so, for me it's enough, what kind of variable have I to change and in which file (i'm playing on mac os x)?

The files that actually define cockpits are in the data bundle at ~data/cockpits there are 7 folders one for each cockpit and a common nav folder but to assign one of these to a particular ship that is done in the units.csv file in the units folder.A lot of this is on the wiki in the Modding sections. So have a look around then come back with your questions I'm not going anywhere  Side effect you might learn more about OSX 8)

Well, first problem!!! I opened units.csv, and changed the string no-cockpit, in this way:
FROM: Goddard,./goddard,Goddard,,Vessel,BOMBER,Recently developed Andolian bomber. One of the most advanced and most expensive human craft currently in service.,goddard-hud.spr,5,no-cockpit,0,0,13.5,{goddard.bfxm
TO: Goddard,./goddard,Goddard,,Vessel,BOMBER,Recently developed Andolian bomber. One of the most advanced and most expensive human craft currently in service.,goddard-hud.spr,5,bomber-cockpit.cpt,0,0,13.5,{goddard.bfxm

But as I load VS, i cannot see me ship in the hangar and as i try to change ship the game crash... What kind of mistake have i made!!!

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but you can switch from the default plain cockpit to the ship-specific cockpit by just jumping back to the cockpit view twice (mine is mapped to key '1', so just press '1' twice.)

Ok, i am quite a dummy with programming! I haven't use any terminal, as far as i know of course.
I opened units.cvs with excel, I took a look and notice that the difference between the strings of ships with cockpit and the strings of the ships without, it was "no-cockpit" instead of, for instance, "rlaan-cockpit.cpt". So i replaced "no-cockpit" of the Goddard's strings with "bomber-cockpit.cpt", that i supposed war the right one for this kind of ship, and... so i have ruined something!
I know, it's a wrong empirical method :D and above all i have any idea if the informations i have gave you are useful or not
anyway, thx a lot for helping

I opened units.cvs with excel,
That was not the mistake it was most likely when you saved it ;) exel has a well documented history of doing what M$ wants not what you want  It changes the format of the file invalidating it.Try a search on the forum for "editing units.csv" should be something in one of those posts that will point you in the right way.

Hello,
You should be able to do it with a simple text editor, .csv are "Comma Separated Values" files, i.e. each line is divided into columns (as shown in excel) by commas. Just do a search to find the relevant line, then edit the n-th field which referenced the cockpit.cpt. Don't touch anything else, and it should work. Maybe you can copy the file beforehand to keep an original one if you need to get back to the default values.

I have used both exel and Libre Office calc there is usually a dialog box that pops up when you save asking if you want to keep the file format do say yes that should do the trick, though the back up file is always recommended.

well, i have understand what kind of mistake i have made. As Loki said: after the modifying, excel saved the file in a wrong way. What can i do now? Re-install VS exporting the save-file (but I can't find anything like that) or just download a new version, copying/pasting the correct .csv file in the old folder?

, copying/pasting the correct .csv file in the old folder?
Yeah that's the way I always try to follow a very old engineering principal KISS (keep it simple stupid ) I have a clean copy on my windows VS install. So if you have the need just post .Getting it from the svn repo is out as we now split units.csv into logical sections so they are more human readable/editable so the current code assembles those separate files into an array.

ok, i have done so (downloading a new version and copying units.csv in the old folder), now VS are running. Therefore i have opened the .csv file with textedit, modifying the goddard's strings "no-cockpit" in "bomber-cockpit.cpt":

Goddard,./goddard,Goddard,,Vessel,BOMBER,Recently developed Andolian bomber. Topic SOLVED, I had just to reboot!!!
well, cockpits on/off for dummies: 1) open units.csv ("units" folder) with textedit or something similar; 2) find the ship you want to modify; cut the strings "no-cockpit" (usually there are three or four "no-cockpit" each ship) and paste "light_cockpit.cpt" (or "medium_cockpit.cpt", or "bomber-cockpit.cpt", or "heavy-cockpit.cpt": you can find the different cockpits in "cockpits" folder); 3) save units.csv and reboot.
Et voilà, you have your cockpits.

They are actually simple, anyway better then nothing.
Now I come back to my original question: it's possible to import the cockpits of Privateer Gemini Gold? In theory, they are just masks covering the view. The question perhaps concerns the type of the files

The pioneer cockpits should work as you mention just make sure that all the info displays are present in the imported cockpit.

Enjoy the Choice :)

That should work you might have to edit the main cockpit definition file for the placement though there is some info on cockpits on the wiki IIRC there was a small app in the utilities section here on the forum to work with cockpits as well.

Enjoy the Choice :)

do you mean Hud Editor?
Anyway, importing the cockpits from privateer was successful, the only important display i cannot see is the weapons rooster (and therefore the ammunitions)
