Cannot see objects in space

I have been playing VS for about 2 weeks now, and I love this game. I even modified the vegastrike.config file to setup my gamepad.

The only problem is that I cannot see ships or bases. I can see many Ox (Oxen, Oxes), and the afterburner and lights of other ships including my own. My ship's lights blink on the landing pad, but I cannot see my ship. Because of that, I have been hesitent on buying a new ship.

I'm wondering if I'm using the wrong shader, or if the graphics are set wrong. I am have a tough time making sense of that part of the config file.

I run a Lenovo H405 with AMD Athlon II X4 645 3.1GHz, 8GB of RAM, openSUSE 13.2 KDE Plasma, ATI Redwood Radeon HD 5670.
Installed v0.5.1.r1-43.1

music v0.5.1.r1.12.1
speech v0.5.1.r1-16.1

Hi Dave welcome to the forums if you are editing the config file manually it is easy to break a section as the file is XML and uses comments to make individual sections active or not.Did the distro version you installed come with the setup app some distros forget to package it it does the job of inserting the comments in the right places. So I suggest that you set the syntax highlighting to XML and check the whole file for validity or post a copy here and I can check it  Not seeing your ship or the base backgrounds does suggest some thing wrong in the config file as it was designed to be flexible for full conversion mods.

Enjoy the Choice :)

The only section that I modified in the config file is the controller section that I added. The only time I saw the setup app was the first time I opened the game. I tried reinstalling shortly after the first time I played, but after the reinstall, I never saw that setup app. Is there a way that I can install it manually?

I would love to paste my config file, but it is 30000 characters too long. What language is it written in? I cannot identify what lines are commented out.

The setup app should still be around in /bin look for "vssetup" then invoke it in a terminal with just it's name as /bin is in your normal path  As I mentioned in my answer it's XML so set kwrite's syntax highlighting to XML then the inactive sections will be visible as sections without the syntax highlighting they are delineated by a comment tag beginning and ending the inactive sections. An other way to get the setup app would be to delete or move the vegastrike.config out the way as the vegastrike main app does not find the config file it assumes that it's a first run.As for posting your config don't worry I've been trolling thru dozens over the years and our server has the room for it just zip/tar it so the upload is faster as an attachment

Thank you very much for your help. I can now see bases, I had to turn off accelerated graphics in setup. I also knocked Geometry down to High Detail and Shaders down to Average Shader. I'll continue trying different settings, but I still cannot see my ship on the launch pad, nor can I see any ship in space with the exception of Ox.

Also, I uploaded my config file if you would like to take a look (I added the section for the Logitech Dual Analog Gamepad using some instructions that I found)

Great for you it's always much more satisfying solving some issue on ones own :D We have lost count of the number of bugs and issues that our code has uncovered over the years none of the GPU suppliers is exempt. Which is why we always recommend the latest drivers for any GPU, are you using the open source radeon driver or AMD's binary blob that may make a difference.
