white.bmp

Post by krh »

Hi,

I just downloaded Vegastrike, and I'm trying to get it to run on Windows ME. The unpatched 0.4.0 didn't display a mouse cursor for me, so after reading some posts in this forum, I downloaded the 0.4.1D patch and installed it on top of 0.4.0. Now Vegastrike fails to load. Looking in stderr.exe shows me the following helpful error:

Code: Select all

1.Loading bmp file splash_pacifier.jpg Bind... !!!! Load Success
1.Loading bmp file white.bmp white.bmp, not foundFatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

Loop average : 0

So I searched for white.bmp and found it in the textures directory. I made an educated guess, based off of the location of splash_pacifier.jpg, that white.bmp should be in the animations/splash_pacifier.ani directory. So I made a copy and put it there. Then I tried again and got another crash. This time stderr.txt told me:

Code: Select all

1.Loading bmp file splash_luddite.jpg Bind... !!!! Load Success
1.Loading bmp file white.bmp white.bmp, not foundFatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

Loop average : 0
"Ah ha!" I said to myself, "I bet it wants white.bmp in each of the splash screen directories!" So I spent a few moments cutting and pasting white.bmp, tried again, and got:

Code: Select all

1.Loading bmp file splash_cisb.jpg Bind... !!!! Load Success
1.Loading bmp file white.bmp white.bmp, not foundFatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

Loop average : 0

"Ah ha," I said to myself, "It's not actually telling me where it wants white.bmp." So now I'm stuck. Vegastrike clearly wants white.bmp to be somewhere others than the textures directory, but I don't know where.

I have already tried reinstalling, but that gives the exact same result. The options are set at the bare minimums, but this doesn't seem to make a difference (which makes sense, given the error message). Just in case I updated my video drivers, but again, no effect.

What can I do to get Vegastrike running?

gee hadn't seen this one before...
it needs to have a white.bmp somewhere where it looks
try the top level or the bin dir

is this the CVS data or the actual 0.4.x data?
maybe rename vegastrike.config to vegastrike.config.xml and see if it's still valid xml by opening it in ie

Doesn't work. First I tried the top level directory, then the bin directory, then both, and it still can't find it.

IE thinks vegastrike.config is just fine.

I'm using the stuff available from the "Files" link off of the main page. First I downloaded vegastrike-0.4.1.exe, then vegastrike_patch_0.4.0_to_0.4.1.zip. I installed the first in C:\Program Files\Vegastrike\Vegastrike-0.4.0, and then I unzipped the other on top of it, so that it replaced a bunch of files.

Before I noticed that I had white.bmp, I did try to connect to the CVS server, but I didn't manage to make it work before I thought to check for white.bmp in the Vegastrike tree I already had.

Just in case it makes any difference, I'm going to post the full text of the most recent stderr.txt I have:

Code: Select all

I'm sort of suspicious here. First it loads a lot of things from textures/, then it jumps to animations/explosions_(someone).ani/, then it jumps back to textures/, then it jumps again to animations/splash_(something).ani/, and then it goes I don't know where to look for white.bmp. It would be nice to see the full path of every file it was looking for, but it doesn't show that. Is there a way to force that?

Eeek, that means I have to download all the data again, right? (I'm on dialup) And cygwin? (Since I don't have VC)

I'm unhappy at the moment.

krh,

Just checking, you have WinME (me same and I have no problems with 4.0 and patch), and downloaded the 'unpatched' 4.0? Or recently DLed the v4.1?

If you DLed recently, the file available IS the patched v4.1. In which case, you don't need to install the patch.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling? If so, did it make any difference?

Tried just installing the main file (not the patch) and running? Maybe the patch is causing the problem?

Checked the checksum figures to make sure your DL wasn't corrupted?

If you don't want to redownload, you can purchase the CD at cafepress (see website).

Be warned, some have had problems with cygwin and CVS data, so no guarrantee it would work (pontiac is currently trying other programs for compiling, but no success as yet I think).

Yes, I have WinME. I downloaded http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor ... -0.4.1.exe yesterday. Supposedly this is 0.4.1, but it installs itself in C:\Program Files\Vegastrike\Vegastrike-0.4.0. I read on this forum that this is normal.

While the first Vegastrike started fine and seemed to work (though I didn't go into space), I did not see a cursor, and I didn't have the option to choose between a software and a hardware cursor. I read on this forum that I could correct this problem with the available patch, so I downloaded http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor ... _0.4.1.zip and installed it on top of the Vegastrike that I had already downloaded. The downloads aren't corrupted--the MD5 sums match.

It's possible that the patch is the source of my problem, that instead of patching to the latest version like I intended I've mixed them somehow. At the very least I'm confused as to why 0.4.1D installs itself into a directory marked 0.4.0 and why overwriting the installed 0.4.1D executable with the patch's 0.4.1D executable suddenly gives me the option to choose between a hardware and a software cursor: If it's the same version, what's the difference?

The directory 0.4.0 is the current overall game version. Until there is another major release, all patches are essentially changing the 4.0 information. So the 4.1D patch is only changing some information in the overall 4.0 structure, NOT making a whole new version of the game for a new directory.

The patch DOES overwrite the executable 4.0 with a replacement. This replacement (could be the same size) has some code changes included to allow such things as the cursor option and other minor tweaks.

OOPS, sorry, misread your post. Probably, the patch includes some extra coding and/or files to bring in the extra changes. BUT, why the full DL doesn't have it, I don't know.

Can't help further, maybe one of the developers knows the answers to the rest of your queries.
