0.5.1.r1 release is Ready

Post by klauss »

0.5.1 r1 release is out the door.

We'll receive bug reports, as usual, and if the reported issues with fglrx can be worked around we'll be releasing maintenance versions as r2, r3 and so on.

We're using OpenSUSE's Build Service (OBS for short), and the packages are there already, so if you installed from OBS you should be able to update rather easily (hopefully, even with delta rpms :D ) - not all repos have been tested, so if you're on one of the unlucky ones to spot a packaging bug, please post on the bug tracker ASAP.

vegastrike-music and vegastrike-speech were unchanged so you don't have to update. "Updated" versions are there since r1 is the first official (non-beta) release.

Linux

You can look for the packages in OBS' search interface, or you can set up the repos from the urls below (which is the best way to get updates):

For the most popular linux distros (available in OBS), we have zypper/deb repos: Notes for RPM-bsed distros (Fedora, openSuse)

Most RPM-based distros use yum or yum-compatible tools, so you just have to download the repo description into the proper path: "sudo wget {repository path}/{repo name}.repo -O /etc/yum.repos.d/{repo name}.repo" (for openSuse, it's /etc/zypp/repos.d). You'll probably have to browse the repository to find the "repo name" (it's not evident from the above links, derived from OBS project settings).

It should prompt whether to import the repo key next time you update metadata, with zypper refresh or yum update.

Other distros

If your distro is not on the list, source tar balls and data packages can be downloaded directly from sourceforge:
Instructions for building from source and installing data from the tarballs in your home folder would go like this, assuming you've downloaded the pertinent tarballs and dependencies already:

Code: Select all

~$ mkdir vegastrike-0.5.1.r1
~$ tar xvjf vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1.tar.bz2
~$ cd vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1
~/vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1$ mkdir build
~/vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1$ cd build
~/vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1/build$ cmake ..
...
~/vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1/build$ make
...
~/vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1/build$ cd ../../vegastrike-0.5.1.r1
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ mkdir bin
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ cp ../vegastrike-src-0.5.1.r1/build/{vegastrike,vegaserver,setup/vssetup,objconv/mesh_tool} bin/.
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ tar xvjf ../vegastrike-data-0.5.1.r1.tar.bz2 --strip-components=1
...
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ tar xvjf ../vegastrike-extra-0.5.1.r1.tar.bz2 --strip-components=1
...
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ tar xvf ../vegastrike-music-0.5.1.r1.tar --strip-components=1
...
~/vegastrike-0.5.1.r1$ tar xvf ../vegastrike-speech-0.5.1.r1.tar --strip-components=1
...
You can obviously skip the unpacking of the optional download packs.

Windows

Windows is up and ready. You can download from SourceForge download area.

Bug reports

Many distros (not all) have a vegastrike-debuginfo or vegastrike-dbg package you can use to install debugging info and provide better stacktraces for bug reporting - please, when reporting a crash-type bug, install that package and run vegastrike through gdb:

Code: Select all

$ gdb --args vegastrike --debug=3 2>stderr.txt
(gdb) run
...
Segmentation Fault
(gdb) bt full
<paste this in your bug report>
Also include all information about which distro and platform you're running, GPU brand and model, driver versions, the output of the "glxinfo" command, the captured output of vegastrike itself (stderr.txt from the above commands), all of which could potentially include useful information for tracking down the bugs.

Well, someone has put VS on desura.

I contacted desura to give me dev access and they have, but really the one that did the first release should do this one (because it will take me some time to learn it).

No way to find out? I had to setup a new account on download.com to get a new release up. Never heard back from ace123 for the account info for it. I also setup a facebook page for us as the only other one I found was from the wikipedia page.

I just submitted VS on OBS for the official games repo, which is the staging ground for Factory and then the official distribution.

Cross your finges ;)

(they're quite picky about packaging guidelines)

@klauss
I am wondering if one could create is a graphics benchmark mission to get Vegastrike into Phoronix test suite. Maybe there is already one? You've got some nice heavy planet shaders, just find a configuration which runs with mesa drivers without triggering a fallback. It would increase the exposure of the game and get a few contributors maybe.

We'd need some scripting first - like a cutscene. We don't have scripting of that kind yet, but it's been a feature request for ages.

Maybe, when we have such scripting, we could put together a benchmark cutscene.

I see. What about something simple as starting the mission with autopilot enabled? Or maybe start the mission with a certain position, velocity, hehe.

It wouldn't cut it, benchmarks have to be very stable (always do the same).

I didn't get to test the ubuntu .desktop item yet.

You can launch from the console as "vegastrike".

Did you use the 11.04 repo from OBS to install?

So what I did:
Go to the 11.04 link posted here above, downloaded from folder 'i396' the VS deb package, installed, then downloaded form folder 'all' the vs data all package, and installed, and as I said the console show me this:
libboost_python-py27.so.1.42.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I dont find that with synaptic
What I'm doing wrong? I guess that is the way

PD: now I have the launcher on my menu but nothing happens when I click it

Ah, nonono...

You have to follow the instructions there.

Not sure it will fix it, but installing directly from the .deb is probably not a good idea.

About the libboost_python stuff, I'll look into it.

Yes, I think following the instructions and installing with synaptic will fix it. Installing from the .deb directly doesn't install the dependencies (one of which is libboost-python).

Have been following the instructions on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_S ... urces.list

Stuck adding apt-key. How is it supposed to look for the repo?

wget https://api.opensuse.org/source/home:kl ... re/_pubkey fails due to Authorization Required.

I think it's wrong... interesting...

Try:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... elease.key

I'll have to link the repo keys in the announcement...

There, I fixed it in the wiki :)

Next issue:
Some dependencies can not be resolved: libswscale0, ..., libavformat52. Available versions are libswscale2, ..., libavformat53. Anyone an idea where to get the older libs from for Ubuntu 11.10. Atm I am inclined to compile vs from source.

Installation was successful.
At start ran into: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_python-py27.so.1.46.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Found libboost_python-py27.so.1.42.0 installed.
Fixed with sudo apt-get install libboost-python1.46.1

Menu link works, sky box and Llama are rendered without errors. As I suspected the Intel Linux driver is in much better shape than the Windows one.

It should have installed it automatically as a dependency.

Edit: Nope, only 1.42.0 was set as a dependency - Added 1.46.1 and it should now work automatically (as soon as it finishes building).
