Seg fault when starting campaign [linux svn ati]

Hi, I just installed vegastrike on my arch linux 64 from svn (rev13042 and data 13037), compiled fine (using gcc44), ran vssetup and vegastrike.
It starts ok, then I click Campaign, it loads a bunch of things and then crash after some seconds with Segmentation Fault.
My card is an ATI Radeon 3450 HD and I'm using driver ati-dri 7.10

I've search and read a lot in this forum but nothing helped me. I setup no sound, no music, no shaders, retro detail, 32bit windowed..
but nothing changed, same behavior. I ran it using gdb and here is the output.

Thanks klauss, that worked.
Well, at least I can load the campaign now. When I tried to travel now, the "space" was white.
I almost couldn't see a thing in my HUD, is that normal? I guess not :P

Anyway, that option I set means my graphics card/driver is not suitable to VS?
I set the details and shaders to the maximum and, besides the space being white, it did not "feel" slow (I don't know how to actually measure the fps).

There's a bug in ATI drivers that makes an option, GL_ACCELERATED_VISUAL, behave just the opposite as it should. It also results in crashes like those you posted.

About whiteness, I'm not sure what it could be. Do you have a screenshot at hand? (mostly to guess what could be wrong by seeing precisely what elements are white).

PS: in the wiki, there's an entry in the GPU database that suggests mesa 7.9 may work a lot better.

I downgraded to 7.9 but the games just seg fault again.
I removed the gl_accelerated_visual option, put it again, couldn't manage to run it.
The, I switched back to 7.10, now it just seg faults regardless of the option.

There's probably something really wrong with my graphics driver.. I try to purge all files related to it and install again.
Do think that's it too? Have some other clue?

Well, the backtrace you posted does indicate major driver issues, becuase it doesn't seem possible that VS could be responsible for a crash inside glClear() - a very very simple function that clears the screen.

But I don't know, VS could be sending the driver confusing instructions somehow that make it crash further down the line, and not at the point of conflict. But in that case, debugging remotely will be nearly impossible...

From your part, I guess the most you could do is play with .config options to see if anything makes any difference - but, from your original post, I guess most of the basic tests you've done already (fullscreen/windowed, shaders/noshaders, etc).

I have successfully downgraded to 7.9 now, recompiled vegastrike and it's working again with gl_accelerated_visual false.
I took a screenshot of the white space as you asked, it's attached.

That looks oddly like an issue with the game still being compiled with spheremaps and not cubemaps... whats your opinion klauss?

Ya, same thing, which is odd, cmake will always compile with cubemaps, and configure will compile with cubemaps by default.

I'll try to be clear and complete on my steps, since I don't know what's really important.
First attempt was using archlinux aur package
But right there in the comments I saw I needed to install gcc44 and boost{,-libs} (which I did)
In this pkgbuild we also apply this patch.
Which did not applied cleanly and I had to comment the last diff, on basecomputer.cpp.

The actual build looks like:

Then, I installed vegastrike-data-svn normally.
Ran vssetup and vegastrike
It does not run without gl_accelerated_visual false.
I'm installing a different system now to try the fglrx driver.

Weren't you using SVN HEAD?

You know, that --with-data-dir smells foul.

I mean, if you're using SVN HEAD but data from an old package, you'll experience that kind of trouble. I'd suggest you check out SVN HEAD (code and data), build and play in-situ. ie:

Sorry for the confusion.
AUR means Arch User Repository and it's just a standardized file we call pkgbuild that holds instructions for building a package.
In this case, the instructions grab the source from the svn just like you said :) (got revision 13042)
But it uses configure instead of cmake to build.

Anyway, I just finished the same steps but using fglrx driver instead and it worked like a charm :D
Last time I checked the closed drivers they suck on composite and acceleration.. now I got no problems.
I guess I'll just make the switch on my real system now. Thanks a lot for your help.
If you're willing to investigate more, I'm open.

That entry in the GPU database cited above is from me :)
I was using mesa 7.9-devel at the time.

I'm using a HD3200 (780G), and Vega Strike is running successfully here on Gentoo Linux with r600g as well as r600c open drivers, current mesa-git (that would be mesa 7.11-devel) xf86-video-ati 6.14.0, and kernel 2.6.38-rc5.
No idea about fglrx, I'm not using it.

I had a quick look at that aur above:

I should not apply that diff I mention either, right? (that there is in the aur pkgbuild)
Is there any other dependencies that I should check the version or whatever?

I just do the windows side of things so not sure what to follow on the linux side. I see no reason why you shouldnt be able to use gcc 4.5 I think thats what I used to compile under ubuntu using cmake

I don't need that patch and I'm using gcc-4.4, you just don't need the patch if you're using system boost, which both ./configure --with-boost=system and cmake use.

Do try the way I specified (ie: data and source in tandem, without the need to specify a path in /usr/share/vegastrike), to rule out dataset or building issues.

If it's indeed the drivers, we'll see how it goes... at the very least we can document the symptoms and the solution ;-) (at the very most perhaps work it around :) )

Checked everything out again, ran ccmake, hit c, e, then g

vssetup is a GUI editor for the configuration file. It depends on gtk+-2:

At my place this file is part of gtk+-2.20.1

However, you can just as well build Vega Strike without vssetup - in this case, you'd first run vsinstall to install your account into ~/.vegastrike, and then edit ~/.vegastrike/vegastrike.config with your editor of choice.

I got gtk2 version 2.22.1 installed.
This file /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gdk/gdkpixbuf.h does exist
but there's no gdk-pixbuf directory anywhere (as shown in the fatal error: gdk-pixbuf/gdk-pixbuf.h)
