Hi there,
This seems like something that should be easy to do, but I can't seem to find how how after multiple attempts to search. This is only really an issue in Rlaan ships (I hear in Aera ships, too, but I haven't tried them yet) but I find the 3d cockpit obstructs vision horrendously compared to the regular HUD. How is it turned off?

Hello and welcome!
Edit your config file, look for the line
<var name="cockpit" value="true"/>
in the section that has the setting name you chose for your graphic detail, e.g.
<!-- #Voodoo TNT GeForce2 GeForce3 --> (some blocks are common to different graphic choices so they show multiple names)
and change it to
<var name="cockpit" value="false"/>

Actually, you should be able to turn it on and off just by hitting '1'. At least, that's how it works on my installation (0.5.0).
On the other hand, if you edit your config file as CLoneWolf describes, you won't have to do that every time you start up the game...
