I'm not sure if there has been previous posts on this topic so sorry if this has been raised before. I'm running Vegastrike on Ubuntu Intrepid but whenever I fly "nose-first" into a cluster of cap-ships my fps drops to about 0-2 (on a good day) which makes it almost impossible to take higher paying bounty missions or, seeing as my pirate bounty hunting ways pissed off uln, forsaken, etc, fend off ambushes. I did try turning the graphics down a lot but it didn't seem to help at all which leads me to believe it's a processing/memory issue. My home directory (where vegastrike is running from) runs off a slave drive by the way, both hdd's have > 1Gb of Linux swap if it helps. Already using compiz-switch as well. If there's anything at all I can do to tune Vegastrike to be more playable I'd really like to know!
Here's some system specs:
2 x 512 mb RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (124 mb memory I think)
AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+ (1599.539 mHz)
Latest Vegastrike svn (rev 12550)
And my Vegastrike configuration file is attached.

Re: Optimizing techniques for vegastrike
It is a memory issue Video card memory you see the second box described in my sig it behave much the same. the trick may be to go the opposite set at Extreme detail the 5200 should handle it it may be slow it's the shuffling of things in and out of the GPU that is slowing things down after all if using retro mode doesn't help it might as well look good if slow .

Re: Optimizing techniques for vegastrike
compiz definitely slow things up! Check the ubuntu linux tutorial in the wiki, at the end there is a little guide on how to disable and enable compiz with a click of your mouse.

Re: Optimizing techniques for vegastrike
For the purpose of anyone else searching the forums for a solution to the similar predicament I've outlined;
I finally turned shader support off (in vssetup) and set my Nvidia restricted driver settings to "high performance" which both helped a million. I was able to approach 8+ Ox cap-ships and only experienced 11-15 fps. However I have to add that some bases and cap-ships (namely fighter barracks and the Clydesdale) become discolored meshes, although in my case this is acceptable for now.
I propose adding performance tips like this into a Wiki page for user accessibility purposes
